Case Western Reserve University: Cool

Case Western Reserve University: Cool
Your rating: None Average: 5.3 (18 votes)

Designers make things cool.
We don’t follow trends. We set them.
Remember when black-rimmed glasses were the exclusive domain of the not-so-hip corporate class? They were a required accessory for pocket protectors and slide rules. Then designers got a hold of them and going geek became eminently chic. Now, as others queue up to get their MFA, we’re changing the way the world sees another corporate-ladder delicacy; the MBA.
The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University is spearheading the Managing as Designing concept – the integration of design attitude and skills into its MBA culture and curriculum.
As a designer, you respond to challenges holistically; by sketching alternatives, prototyping ideas and refining the best ideas. The Weatherhead MBA program speaks your language and can help you develop critical skills to complement your creative nature and shape the life of organizations and the products that they create.

The black-rimmed glasses concept would have been lost if you used round spectacles.

nice concept but the headline makes me cringe. THINGS is a word a skilled copywriter never needs to use, it describes something that could have been explained better. I'll give you an example: instead of "designers make things cool" they could have written "designers make cool cool." this may be just my taste but I think by just pushing this headline a little bit they could have made what still is a good ad even better.

It's a mistake to categorically declare any particular word off-limits to 'skilled copywriters'. I personally prefer the pedestrian tone of the headline. The alternative headline you offer is good, but it smacks of something we've seen before. I think that this writer grabs attention with the 'unpolished' and plain-spoken vocabulary. I'm of the opinion that if you 'cringed' then that's a reaction - and in a swamp of messages, any reaction is an automatic win.

you are correct, it is a mistake to categorically rule out a word. I should have phrased that more carefully. alas, cringe was something I did not because of the content but because of the execution. allow me to explain in baseball terminology: I cringed because the hitter smacked the ball way out of left field. he hit it good and it flew and flew but ultimately touched down just a bit shy of the wall. just that last bit more would have gotten it over. I like homeruns and I reacted because I hoped for one.

long story short: I meant well.
