In Focus: Artists At Work

Agency: Smartypants

Description

Academy Award-nominated production company Smartypants spotlights eight innovative and diverse artists in the vignettes “In Focus: Artists At Work” for the newly transformed National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA).

NMWA, the world’s first major museum solely dedicated to championing women artists, reopened this Fall after a two-year renovation, revealing an overhauled building, powerful exhibitions, and engaging public programs. The three-minute shorts highlight individual artists, telling the story of their backgrounds and practices, and revealing how initiatives for equity--those pursued by the artists and institutional programs like NMWA’s--shape their careers and success. In addition to Alison and Colette, the featured artists include Ambreen Butt, Sonya Clark, Guerilla Girls, Graciela Iturbide, Delita Martin and Rania Matar.

Smartypants introduces the home and studio of artist Alison Saar with tactile shots of flying sawdust and paint-splattered tools as she describes the motivation behind her wood cuttings, paintings, and hand-carved creations that evoke the impact of historical wrongs like African-American enslavement in the US.

Collette Fu, a pop-up artist and paper engineer with a photography background, turns 2D photographs collage-style into pop-up books. These kaleidoscopic stories transport viewers from one culture to another, inspired by reconnecting with her Chinese heritage.
