Extortion of a Picture
The favorite trick for the thieves of advertising ideas
Jaafar Hamza
www.scrambledpaper.com
My friend, Ali, came to me; his eyes were shining, full of “I’ve found it” sparkle ,I always expect when he tells me a new information to technical news. However, this time I have not known that the shining of his eyes carry the news of stealing something belongs to me.
Your idea has been stolen dear friend
When I was shopping in a mall in Saudi Arabia, I saw an ad for a cosmetic product, when I passed near it I stopped suddenly as it reminded me of .of your exact idea, the concept, the vision, the message , in short, I saw your total exact idea “stolen”.
My friend finished his talk, I waited for him to show me the brochure of the ad which contains my stolen idea of my ad, I waited a few seconds till I saw, oh my god, really, there is no coincidence, the ad is comprehensively similar to my ad, it is actually a carbon copy of the concept, visual and message
And, god heavens, they applied it widely on several examples
Not to forget, that the ad I produced, with my two Indian colleagues was my idea inspired by my wife, won the silver award in (creativity award competition). In the United States among 22 US states and 36 countries around the world
My ad got that award under the title” The best printed\published ad for a magazine” in 2010
The idea of my ad is about promoting a cosmetic product (cream) through presenting a woman, with a challenge look in her eyes, and two lines under them, like old warriors who used to draw two lines under their eyes to scare the enemy and as a symbol of chivalry and courage. This style is still used by American football players as well as commandos teams. The idea here is using the cosmetic product in drawing those two lines with the title “Fight Aging”
That was my idea of the ad basically
http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/minus_10_antiageing_cream_fight_a...
What we can see in the copied ad is the same idea in every tiny detail, the general concept hasn’t been changed, putting the cream under the eyes to carry the warrior idea hasn’t been changed as well, even the message hasn’t been altered or modified too “Fight for your Skin”. Moreover, they applied the idea on several examples; they presented a city woman with a shield, a man from the cost with a knife and a boy in his school with a boxing glove.
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4796/copypastead.jpg
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5656/antiaging3.jpg
It is really a visual “extortion” case, the one who was extorted has nothing but to shout loud and cry, “this is mind scorning and despising the thieves of ads ideas are professional of”. It must be shown to the public that has become more enlightened using the net
This kind of visual extortion of ideas makes the original creator of the idea a rebel and the ones who find it talk, thus this pirated act circulates several parties as follows:
The product brand owner, the advertising agency, the consumer, the party which its idea and effort were stolen, as well as the ad audience.
The advertising agency which creates this circle, owns the time and effort in offering the supposed “Creative” ideas to its costumer “the Brand owner”. The advertising agency thinks-what a bad thinking- that imitating ideas for its costumer’s ads will be “easy” and would not be noticed.
And this is what – let’s say- the top of imbecility of the brand owner and the target people of the ad
In a world that a lot of its population breaths “intellectual theft” as they breath air, as it is simple for many reasons, it is highly important to all the specialized, the followers or the founders of this visual and intellectual extortions, they all should shout loud to stop this crime of mean behavior with others that exists from bright names and luxurious offices called Advertising Agencies. Those agencies think they are smart and can foul play the costumers by stealing others ideas without much ado from those “others”.
Back to my friend Ali when he showed me my stolen ad, he asked me: what are you going to do now?
I, realizing that ideas theft is as hunting dears in the wild, no law for hunting and no restrictions, so I said:” I will put a sign in the hunting area hoping that it will be noticed by those and to make them realize their acts. And this article is the “SIGN””.

Question to Shawali and other professionals too free to comment to this topic.Welcome
sushil kumar swamy 435 pencils | Mon, 2012-05-07 03:46Dear Shawali as you have helped and mentor me a lot with regard to my career. I follow each and every word as its so valuable for me because you are a media scholar which i miss.Few weeks back you had suggested me to keep all the violent and adult content out off our portfolio if we are trying for internship. This is absolutely true as the organisation may have a bad image about our over all personality. But here i give you an example of newcomer's name "Siddhi Yadav"( mumbai india) portfolio who added just one campaign in her portfolio which was DUREX condom campaign before applying to the McCann. http://www.behance.net/gallery/durex/420594
This girl applied in McCann(The worlds largest Advertising agency as per the wings are concerned) with this portfolio and got selected before one year. Today she is art head in McCann.I really have to know that what complexity this durex idea has? It did not take me to much time to learn graphic design when i decided to jump in to advertising but still confused about procedure and the criteria of selection to be in advertising. Please give me an appropriate answer.

Leonardo Pastacaldi 30 pencils | Sat, 2012-04-21 16:50Hello everybody.
I am Leonardo and I have been working as a copywriter for 7 years.
Six months ago I was diagnosed with Nerdphobia, a mental disorder which strikes traditional copywriters with the crippling constant anxiousness of being replaced by a digital expert.
Medications do not seem to work (not to mention the side effects) and
the guys at the group reckon a good book on new media might be our next try.
Would you please suggest me some title?
Thank you and God bless

Gillette " Take it all off"

Hey,
I'm trying to understand what exactly Gillette is trying to say with this ad (and the other ads from the same campaign).
Gillette is for everyone? - gay, trans, fat, skinny...? Or simply that it can be used everywhere and that it can "take it all off"? What is the central message and the benefit for the consumer?

Firstly I want to ask your kindness because my English is not good at all
Secondly I really want to ask if you have any Used Brief for me to do (is it ethical and possible?) , because I have this big curiosity in Advertising, and I have this somewhat feeling when I saw Advertising Brief to be done, especially ambient thing, it drives me insane and makes me want to do it so much, and also I need to ask you this because I don't have many advertising friends here so please if you would kindly give that holy piece of brief
And finally I felt that my creativity is not that good compared to professional creatives, but I love to learn a lot and if there's anything I could help to brainstorm, swapping ideas or any concept-making or any ad-making just tell me, I'd love to help you out!
Big Thanks!

Anti-smoking ad 1990s?
Beneton 3 pencils | Sat, 2012-04-14 20:29Does anyone know of a 1990s anti-smoking advert, I think with Christy Turlington, with her on a theatre stage rotating carrousel, roughly split into four scenes describing each scene with her narrating, it was quite cool.

Spot about storks carrying bulbs?
Just words 7 pencils | Fri, 2012-04-13 15:09Hi guys. I need to find for a reference a spot that promotes the use of low energy bulbs. It's about birds (storks if my memory doesn't fail) which are carrying different kinds of bulbs, low energy ones and the old ones. The storks which carry the old ones fell down while the others keep flying normally. The aesthetics were sort of surrealist. Does anybody knows which spot I'm talking? Any help will be useful.
Finding images

Eighty percent creative idea is pre generated by company's own brand manager ad agencies are just a resource to spread them up.

A Question on Advertising here in ADotW
hatfrog 21 pencils | Mon, 2012-04-02 13:17Hello folks,
So like a lot of people in the world, I have no idea what the hell I want to do. Advertising seems like a good idea, having my own communication background and being obsessed with art and seduction. Frankly not sure if my romanticized vision will match reality, since I'm only now looking for a job in Advertising, some agency that might hit me off in Amsterdam, but lets give it a try.
So maybe someone might help me with this one... Most ads I see here seem one dimensional, and yet most case studies in agency websites are multi-layered, integrated, and overall complex and cohesive.
I don't get it. What are agencies looking for these days? I attempt to build campaigns more than ads, because these seem more realistic than the many one-hit ideas around. Mind you, no disdain is given to those, rather the fact that I don't understand how between what I see here and and I see agencies showing off, it seems to mismatch so much.
Of someone well integrated in the field, what really goes around? What is really valued for an agency? Being someone trying to break in, what would cause the most stir?
Any insights? And off we go for a first post.
While creating idea we follow the mass communication. Is there anything to follow that could help in creating Layouts or arts?
sushil kumar swamy 435 pencils | Sat, 2012-03-31 02:47While working i realized that creating idea is a bit easy as we have many helping and associated resources like communication arts, briefings given by company, current affairs, researches, competitive brands, but while creating layout i really feel blank and get nothing to follow. is there any rules or study in creating innovative layouts that we can follow?

sushil kumar swamy 435 pencils | Thu, 2012-03-29 16:37Since i have never been to big ad agency like WPP and have least knowledge regarding the culture inside. The curiosity which i have is that "Who is at the very first responsible for creating idea for any ad is that creative director or copywriter?
Miami Ad School on the front page
Shawali 5441 pencils | Mon, 2012-03-26 10:13Having seen the Risk campaign on the front page, I'm gonna ask the question that burns everyone's finger tips : Ivan, why do students from MAS get to have their work featured on the front page?
Because even if you can tell the students brought a lot of attention to the execution, we rarely see good advertising coming from this school and as Hadrons said, they belong more to the Exhibition forum than to the front page.
Posting MAS ads on the forum would bring more attention to it, and certainly raise the level a little bit. Or maybe we could have some of the best ads from the forum featured on the front page. =)
Anyhoo, I personally think there should be a clear distinction between student and professional work. But there might be some special agreement between MAS and All Creative World that I am not aware of.
Thanks!

Viral videos in ads
MichaelJohnson 242 pencils | Sun, 2012-03-11 14:45Virals are generally created by an agency and then release on public.
My question is what about exisiting youtube videos that have been slightly altered or doctored and used as part of a brand's campaign?
I'm sure there must be more, I can't think of any at the moment, but here is an example from Sweden where they took existing video of babies talking and played with it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVzLunvct8M
I think it was quite well received. Anyway, is this ok? I mean, there are many print ads which rely on allusions to pop culture and comic characters etc. Does a popular youtube video which has been altered fit into this category, or is it stealing?
Question about Academic Approach - Any and All Information Acceptable
tr3vad4wg 9 pencils | Sat, 2012-03-10 06:56Hello Everyone,
So here is my question, and trust me when I say I have been trying to locate more information on the matter, but haven't had any luck at all.
I am a current student at a University and had a question about the benefits/opportunities or any general information, personal or professional examples or instances that any one could provide - it would be Greatly appreciated.
I am majoring in Marketing, and have chosen Journalism as my minor.
Does anyone have any insight into this desired combination of academic study?
Whether you yourself did the same thing, know some one that has, or just have a good understanding on the application of them.
The reason I ask is because I am ultimate refining the path I want to take - so I am just trying to find some basic information on the basis of those two areas - leaving out other details that I would also invest into my career.
Like I said - Any and All Information is Welcome - whether you heard something by word of mouth, have an idea of the outcome of having a focus in both of these areas, etc. Mainly, because I find that certain aspects of marketing and certain aspects of journalism (primarily advertising) overlap - so it would seem more beneficial than I initially realized to focus in on these two academic fields.
Hopefully I hear back from some people! I guess we will see!
Thanks!
Where to start? student!
Rezyuz 11 pencils | Wed, 2012-03-07 16:12Hello!
Recently me and two friends started a dutch design bureau. After making a couple of websites, "standard" ads (non creative simple DTP), and logo's. We had a good chat and asked ourselves what do we really want to be in 5 years? Just another web design company?
So we cut the cord, and after a few weeks of setting up a business, we started a creative agency focused only on advertisement/campaigns. Thing is, we have 0.0 work to display in that branch! All we have is our web design, logo's etc from local clients.
"Why not start doing advertising for them?" Mostly, they don't have budget or want it. They simply do not have to compete like big companies do. So how do we reach out to good companies? Without any work?
We decided we'd make some "fictional" work by simply choosing some brands and just come up with some ads (still working on them). But even after we got them done, and they look great for a beginner. How do we get our first good client?
How did you guys do it? I hope your experience can make my knowledge richer. Do competitions? Where? Just go to a company with a concept and pitch? How do i know they even need anything?
I hope you guys can lend us a hand here because we are dying to start, but just do not get an opportunity.
Thanks for reading.
So when does the new competition begin?
