New here - some questions

Hi, I'm Shaun. I stumbled on this site and have enjoyed looking through some of the archives. I will post some of my own ideas in future for feedback.

I wonder if there is an easier way of looking at peoples work instead of trudging through the post history to stumble upon it. For example I see Shawali's comments pop up a lot and am interested in viewing some of his original stuff, but I have trouble finding if adds are the users or are just reprints from somewhere. Am I missing a button or tab somewhere for this?

Anyway, I hope to learn about peoples experience getting into the advertising industry, and give and receive feedback on ideas.

If you love the creative side of advertising, then you need to read this.

a few weeks ago a few of us got together and decided that if you really want to test your creative abilities, you need to do two things. 1) have someone give you a product to do an ad for, instead of already having an idea for an ad and then placing a product inside it. i.e. having an idea for a car ad and then placing a Lexus inside the ad. And 2) You need to have something to strive for. You need a little competition in order to really give it your all. That's why we created a game, of sorts, that allows you to do this. This game allows you to pit your creative abilities against others on this site and helps you become a better creative. It also let's you do what this site is meant to do, and that's interact with the other creatives who are here. You'll get the chance to make connections with people already in the business. Or maybe find a CW or AD that you can work with and help each other build your portfolios. But most importantly, you'll get to make new friends that share the same passion and love for the creative side of advertising that you do. I haven't been a member of this site long, but I have met some really cool, creative people that I would have never been able to meet otherwise. I urge everybody on this site to just give this game a try. It's really as close as you can get to actually being in an agency, without being in an agency, and it's a lot of fun. Okay, I've talked you ears enough, so if your interested in doing this, here's the original thread you can use to get involved.

http://adsoftheworld.com/forum/121716.

Oh, and for more of what the game is like, look for the Emergen-C post that's on the exhibition page.

Take care and hope to be playing against you soon. :)

Is everything a remix?

Hey guys, I'm quit enjoying A.o.t.W its great seeing all this awesome campaigns. The only thing I have quit my problems with, is that there seem to be few people, who spoil everything by four simple letters DONE, its a lable some use quit often. Don't get me wrong I think it is very important to do original and new fresh stuff, but sometimes the DONE Dilema gets kind of strange to me, " Oh so done I have seen that in some book in 1852" ;) What do you think about this topic? When is an idea done and when hase there obviously some inspiration? Is it the task of creatives to know most of the stuff that has been done, to avoid repeating it?
To bring a little more media in the discussion here is an awesome video that deals with this issue:

http://vimeo.com/25380454

Have fun guys, hope there will be some discussion.

PS: First one who find this the same topic in the forum ( Havent watched ) and copy past it in the comment with a big bold DONE, will win a " Are you fucking kidding me" meme via mail!

Sincerely, Kevin(kevvander)Fitz

Is it always necessary to scrap first ideas?

It is repeatedly said by those in the ad business, that your first 10-20 headlines or ideas are crap and that you should just look at them as simply "flushing the system" of ideas that are tired, hack, or useless. I'm just interested in how many of you believe this, as I play devil's advocate and argue that first ideas can and at times do become brilliant ads and/or campaigns. I don't think a predetermined "timeline" or number is what results in whether the ad will be a success or not. What do you think?

If I wrote a book on ad ideas would you read it?

Okay, first of all I didn't even produce a single ad in my life, never worked for an ad agency but get many interesting ideas once in a while. I was wondering if I collated all these ideas and send to a publisher would I need credentials to market them or can I sell the book on the weight of the ideas?

Do you need to work for an ad agency to come up with ideas when anyone can come up with ideas of their own? Btw, I mean ideas only not graphics.

Any help, suggestions tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Iceland- how are they considered in the advertising world?

Hi

I am an advertising student in Belgium. Next year we can go on a foreign internship for a few months.
I have decided to go to a scandinavian country because of a few reasons. A very practical one is that almost everybody speaks english (as apposed to mediteranean countries for example). Another one, and the most important one, is that they just have good advertising.

Since I don't know any advertising agencies in scandinavian countries I thought I'd start my research here, on adsoftheworld.
My first choice to go to next year is Iceland, because it's a completely different country from Belgium. The most different from Belgium than any other scandinavian country.

But now that I look at all the ads posted here from Iceland, I'm a bit dissapointed. There's only a small amount of ads and only 3 different agencies. And to make it even worse, you can't find these agencies websites.

So now I'm wondering, is Iceland just misrepresented? Or are they really not that good at advertising and should I choose finland instead?

Thank you for helping

Naomi

Is saying 'no' during a creative session taboo?

First of all, happy new year to you all,

I ended last year wondering about this question, so I'm starting the new year with posting it here.

Basically, a lot of people say that you shouldn't any kill ideas during a brainstorm session, that all ideas have potential and that by saying 'no', you make the session very difficult, but somehow, I find it hard to believe that. Are you allowed to say 'no' and label something as a bad idea in a premature stage?

I understand it might make the brainstorm session very rough and difficult, but I doubt it's productive to continue in the wrong direction. I reckon it's all about the balance but some people keep insisting saying 'no' is a no-go.

Anyhow, I'm very interested about your takes on this.

Thanks!

Let's play a little game

Since I, and I'm sure a lot of you, can't help but pick easy product to do ads for (and usually have an idea and then match it to a product) I thought we could play a game and it goes like this: The first person to reply to this post, recommends a product for me and whoever else wants to participate to do an ad on. We, then, post our work for critique (and rate from 1-5) and whoever has the best ad gets to pick the next product for the competition. If you do participate, you have to rate every ad posted, except your own. Hopefully this will challenge us to make ads for products we find "hard", and get more people involved in this forum. If you are reading this and are interested in participating say so in your comment just so we get an idea how many people are playing. Once we figure out how many people want to participate, and we know of the product we 're working on we can discuss when it is due.

Mr. Fixit's picture 121 pencils

Does anyone bother to look at the posted ads?

If this is a site where creatives can get together to talk about advertising, view each others work, etc... why does it seem as if no one takes the time to do it. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, but as a "newbie" to this site I was anxious to have my work critiqued in order to become better. I also wanted to look at other creatives work and, hopefully, give constructive criticism and kudos; so far, only the latter has happened. I did back tracking and found things that have been here for 2 years and only have 13 comments. Maybe I'm out of line, and if I am then I apologize, but I would think if you have an outlet like this that it would be used to its fullest. Once again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone as it was not my intent. Thanks for time.

please help me identify old ad

I last saw this one on TV about a year ago. Woman singing (I think "The weather outside is frightful....."), only part of face is visible (mouth, nose, chin); very sexy, maybe Latino looking. Maybe an ad for some liqueur? Have searched far and wide to find and identify this one.

Media Design School

Hi,

I was researching about Portfolio schools when I stumbled upon Media Design School. It's in New Zealand. It has got the award of 4th best school of the decade by Young Guns. Has anybody heard about this school? Is it worth doing a creative advertising course there?

Help with making a portfolio

I will be graduating with BA this may and I have couple of interviews lined up. I was wondering if you guys could help me making my portfolio.

How do I arrange my portfolio?

What are the things to put on it?

Should I put the strategy with my ad designs?

Creativity may attract but cant sell !

When consumer say, "ok i try this" this is advertising. But when consumer say " I need that red soap with green packet" its only beacause of quality that a product carry in itselves to remind.

Creative Crowdsourcing Sites

Hello Fellow CWs & ADs & CDs & DVDs
Which Creative Crowdsourcing sites have you tried and what are your reviews? Exclude logo sites like Logotournament.com and 99designs.com, and Domain Naming sites like Squadhelp.com. There are lots of creative crowdsourcing sites now that allow you to be a Copywriter or an Art Director working for big brands without the need to join an agency, what are your views?

Online or short courses in Art Direction

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some online or short courses in Art Direction. Anyone know of any good ones? Obviously looking for the best schools that offer the best courses.

I am happy to travel but don't have time to study (and travel a lot) so I can't study night/part/full time. The only one I can find is the Academy of Art.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Why are stories so powerful in copywriting, marketing, advertising?

Stories are nailed into our brains right from when we are wee young things.

They are how we make sense of everything. From a very early age, we poked around, learned what things are, and linked things up:

We grew up drawing pictures of the stories of our lives. Kids in warzones draw guns in their stories; others draw smiley suns. Psychologists use the stories from play, to analyse kids’ psychologies.

A story is the linking of event-A to event-B to event-C, etc, with all the zillions of other stuff cut out. A story is a thought-experiment: what happens when there’s A then B then C…?

Thought experiments help us make plans — the more we’ve sussed things out with thought experiments, the more we can figure out what will happen if we do A then B then C. And plans help us do better in life. They are fundamental to survival and to success.

Maybe that’s why we enjoy films, and books, and stories in conversation. Because survival of the fittest has made the story flick on the pleasure switches in our brains — so that we learn. So we can survive and prosper.

We are each the center of our own stories, of course. And when you make your product integral to our story, you are keying into the fundamentals of how we understand the world.

Here’s how Lay’s (Walker’s) can help make you a part of a story of a potato, towards the end of the potato’s life — so that Lay’s / Walker’s is a part of your story and your life:

SEX SELLS!

Hi,

I'm doing a school project on advertizing and the use of sex as a marketing technique.

Can you please suggest some ads that exemplify the idea of "sex sells"?
- ie. women being objectified/used as sex objects etc.

I'm looking for ads like this:

If you could please link me to some similar ads, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ads and wits that got you your first agency job.

Did you have a solid book or maybe a golden tongue, perhaps both? Did you have a friend of a friend of a friend of another friend who worked at that place and knew a guy. Maybe cold calling in to submission actually worked?

Post your stories and ads and teach us (the wannabes) a thing or two on what is cool to do and what is not. I think first had experience from the members of the community is a great way to expand your knowledge and broaden your understanding.

My story

I had few interviews, went to few events and met few creative directors. Their opinions and criticism is always different. What one liked, another hated. I am currently on my 3rd book draft and still improving. Traveling keeps me motivated and helps me develop new ideas and concepts. It has been about a year, since I started on this path.

PS. I know this forum is pretty dead at times but this would help people like me ;) still hoping and working on our books and trying to score our first job in the ad industry.

Hey guys,

Let's laugh at each others ads. I'm really curious to see with what you guys kicked off your advertising career :D don't be shy, a bad ad only shows how far you've come!

Possible solution for exhibition forum

Why not create a monthly award for best student piece? I'm sure the first few months will be rough in terms of the work quality, but I feel like it will improve as word gets out. Students who are serious about their work but don't post on the forum will be encouraged to give their resumes or portfolios an edge.

What to put in the Portfolio!

Trying to accumulate some info on what employers look for in a portfolio, i.e., good strategic thinking/brand placement, production value of content (if you're a copywriter), how many pieces, should they all be 360 campaigns etc.

Sharing knowledge and comments would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Michael
