Music and advertising
the other taj (7 pencils | Wed, 2009-11-18 06:08Hello people,
My name is Michael, but everyone calls me Taj. I'm a uni student, completing a masters degree in marketing. Before I started doing my studies, and got involved in the world of marketing, I made electronic music as a hobby/potential way of surviving.
Anyway, I still do music whenever i have a spare minute/bound of inspiration, and advertising kinda inspired my music lately - just making short-timed musical soundscapes, as opposed to full-on radio/club tracks.
In your experience, how does one can submit their work to agencies to be considered as part of a commercial work? Do you guys have any suggestions/stories/feedback?
I've included one of my tracks for you guys to have a listen to, and maybe comment on it's suitability, etc. I know it's not your standard catchy tune, but it might offer some value to someone (or i could be just totally way-off on that one :))
Anyway, any thoughts, ideas anything in between will be much, much appreciated!
"Done Effect"
PERP (361 pencils | Sat, 2009-11-14 10:41I've noticed that in almost every campaign one of the comments is always "Done".
Regardless of the fact that some cases are obvious and should actually be labelled, this seems to be achieving the "Done Effect" category.
Here are some examples;
Don't have anything to comment? Write "Done"!
Don't know what the hack are they talking about? Write "Done"!
Don't know the agency? Write "Done"!
Don't remember your name? Write "Done"!
So, my proposition here is "Help the Done".
So, I'm asking for suggestions and treatments; what do you think we can do to help the people suffering from this effect?
Do Ad agencies hire "locals" or do they transfer/promote their own employees abroad?
HellasLover (351 pencils | Fri, 2009-11-13 23:00For example i know that Saatchi & Saatchi has something like 80 locations around the world. Do they hire people from that location/country or do they send their own employees to work in that location? Do they interview and hire people in NY (where they are based) and send them to let's say France, of do they hire in France and have French designers etc work for them?

Nowadays I read fastcompany, contagious mostly, and of course reads magazines and that segments and try to guess concept just reading advertising. But I am sure there are better places and ways to do this.
Any help is really appreciated.

Advertising Awards for Juniors
ibeg2differ (441 pencils | Tue, 2009-10-27 18:00I'm a eager to enter an advertising award, but not through my current agency, as most of the work is commercial and client-oriented. What are some awards directed at young people? Most of them seem to be targeted at "enrolled" students. Should I do a free ad for an NGO and submit it to an award?
Here or there?
Pachinko (6 pencils | Mon, 2009-10-26 13:32In the process of trying to figure out my career path I am reconsidering going back to school rather then to pursue a 3 year fellowship at WWP. What do you think is the proper move to make? Try to go into the field right out of school or work for a masters degree? And if school is your pick, do you think its better to attend a college/university in the states or oversea? Your input is greatly appreciated.
Advertising at the Beach
MWilson (3 pencils | Sat, 2009-10-24 16:08Hello! I am a college student writing a paper comparing US beach advertising to other countries. In the US it is very common to have planes flying overhead pulling banners, skywriting, imprints on the sand, people passing out flyers, etc., but what types of advertising are utilized at the beach in other countries? Specifically I'm looking for advertising at the beach, not advertising of a beach (as well as when the type of advertising began).
Any help or links would be much appreciated.
thanks!

Why is it so hard to find creative ads?
HellasLover (351 pencils | Tue, 2009-10-20 22:41And why are there so many bad ads around? I mean, there is no way professionals made these ads because they are so simple and "stupid", anyone could come up with them. For example, I was driving home the other day and saw a billboard for McDonalds showing a cup of their coffee and a headline "I'm not a millionaire, i'm a coffee lover", isn't this a cheap shot at Starbucks? Is this considered something creative because i don't see how this is creative. There's plenty of examples around and i don't think i need to point out other examples i'm sure you guys seen them, but why is that? Seems like ad agencies don't bother to even think how to make a killer ad and just come up with something that may work but is just too plain.
How to advertise 2 stores in :30 seconds?
Frazzled (3 pencils | Mon, 2009-10-19 09:07Hello,
I am Producing a commercial for a store, actually 2 stores in 1. One part of the store offers swimwear and the other part of the store offers lingerie with a focus on professional bra fitting. The client wants to say a million things in 30 seconds. The challenge is how to sell both stores in one spot? I was thinking of making 2 x :15 and marrying them together.
I am thinking of using 40s vintage footage of ladies at the beach.."Swimwear selection has changed over the years" and then show a bit of the swimwear store..Fade to Black and show vintage lingerie footage..
Any ideas would be greatly apprciated.
thanks.

Let's make an adsoftheworld.com contest!
HellasLover (351 pencils | Thu, 2009-10-15 21:07I thought it would be cool to pick a product and have everyone (whoever's interested) make an advertisement on that product and post it by a deadline. Once everyone posts their ads others would have to rate the other peoples work (not their own). If you are interested reply to this ad so i can brainstorm several products (and post your own if you like) and then we pick which one the majority likes most. At the end of this month i will open another thread under exhibition where you can post links to your ads (photobucket etc) and that's when we can start rating each other's work. So, who's in?
Where are the pictures used in advertisements found?
HellasLover (351 pencils | Thu, 2009-10-15 20:45Do people in advertising "google" pictures they use in advertisements? Do they use the websites that offer high resolution images for a cost? What happens if they can't find a picture they are looking for? Do they go and shoot the pictures themselves? For example let's say i wanted a picture of a guy on top of a mountain playing the violin, that's a pretty hard picture to find...what would i have to do in this case (just an example)? I know this is a noob question but i've always wondered that.
Sex in ads - where is the limit in your country?

This is perfect place to start thit discussion. Perfect, because I don't know any other forum where are posting so many people from so many countries...
What do I want to know?
Where is the limit of sexuality (erotic content and nudity) in ads in your countries? What kind of ads are prohibited and why? And do you think citizens of your country are against sex in ads?
Thanks for answering!

Recommended readings about starting an advertising firm
Kenneth Dreyer (26 pencils | Tue, 2009-10-13 05:29Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some good readings for someone looking to start an advertising company?
I've looked around on amazon and various other places, but the books seems to be fairly old (late 90-ish) and I'm worried a lot of the stuff they discuss might not apply any more.
Cheers,
Kenneth
The Basics of Advertising
Pachinko (6 pencils | Sun, 2009-10-11 15:33Dear Ads of the World Forum members,
My name is Mat, I'm a recent graduate from living in Boston. Since my recent graduation I've found myself a bit lost admit the job market. Maybe this a result of my time spent out of school however I need a bit of a refresher and would love to get your input on a few questions I have about the field.
--> What are the various positions in the advertising and marketing fields that someone like me with a B.S. in communications would be able to aim for as a start?
--> What's the best way of building a portfolio? Would I want to create a full integrated marketing campaign or just single spec ads?
--> If my artist skills isn't up to par however I want to covey my ideas should I still try to create an image?
--> What are some of the better graduate schools to look at to continue in this track, either here or in Canada?
--> Are there any pieces of literature (or websites/blogs) I should keep an eye on to be mindful of how the industry is going? I'm already in the process of reading Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy, any other suggestions?
-->Any other tips?
Any advice you would be able to bestow is greatly appropriate . I'm just looking to get a solid footing and some direction in the field. Till then I'm going to keep an eye on the aftw site and my eat to the ground

What Masters Degree would be beneficial to an Art Director?
ibeg2differ (441 pencils | Sat, 2009-10-10 16:11I'm planning to pursue a Masters Degree in Europe to strengthen myself. I can't afford the expensive ad schools like MAS and VCU .I found an affordable Masters Degree in Typography. Would that degree be beneficial to an Advertising Art Director? Especially since Typography is my weakpoint.
Best ad schools for account planning
leamarie (3 pencils | Fri, 2009-10-09 19:38Hello,
I'm currently working in account management looking to transition to planning and applying to Miami Ad School's account planning program (which is 3 months)...
Just want to get an idea for other schools that have specific account planning programs (not brand management from a client side) just to compare. Though Miami's 3-month thing sounds awesome to me, I am open to longer programs. I care more about the connections the school has than the actual degree offered upon "graduation" ... I'm open to any school pretty much anywhere in the world (would love to live in London).... just need suggestions!
For reference, I got my BS in business but have little real-world work experience (unless you count internships?), so I understand that will limit my ability to certain post-grad programs.
Thanks everyone!!
Search with thumbnails?
alvinpck (1256 pencils | Thu, 2009-10-08 21:37Ivan, is it possible to tweak the site a little; include thumbnails in the searches?
It would make jobs easier. Thanks.
How do you get a job without ad school if it's not an option for you?
CGilb09 (487 pencils | Thu, 2009-10-08 10:00The cop out answer to getting into advertising-- ad school. Sure it's convenient, and sure you'll learn a crap ton of stuff, but at what cost? I was about to attend MAS this past spring but found out it would essentially be impossible for me due to the huge loans I would have to take out and the unavailability of a cosigner that would qualify for taking out such a large amount. I was going to have to take out something like a $30,000 loan for my startup/move/first year costs. Ad another year of ad school cost to my undergraduate debt, and I would be something like $65-80,000 in debt after all of my schooling.
I'm sorry, but advertising is not rocket science, and this just seems blatantly unreasonable to me. Why should I have to surrender my financial future in order to have a shot at using my creativity?
So how on earth does a copywriter get his foot in the door? The only thing I can think of to get face time with CD's is to attempt to schedule informational interviews. But how can I turn those into a job?
Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Could i get a job just by having a portfolio at a low end agency or something similar?
