I think it's playing off the hypothetical against the real, saying "this wouldn't happen, but this can." You might be oversqueezing your Literal gland a tad on this one.

This campaign is sending conflicting messages. On one hand it's saying, "Bad gifts don't save lives.", and on the other hand it's showing us that bad gifts do save lives. This isn't working for me.

I like it. The bad gifts are saving lives, but it's an exaggeration.
