I think it's the only way to really make the script effective. Imagine it in another setting. Two modern day teenagers saying the same things. The target market would just shrug it off and say, that's so unreal. That's not even how we talk! When you employ the style of old American films, you have much more theatrical impact and can therefore get the message across much easier. It's also pretty captivating. I like it alot.
