Peta: Canadian baby seal slaughter, Explore elsewhere

High Bandwidth | Low Bandwidth | Mobile
Your rating: None Average: 7.9 (110 votes)

Just in time for Canada Day, PETA will be running its new "Explore Elsewhere" ad featuring a rendition of Canada's national anthem "O Canada" playing over footage of baby seals as they are clubbed to death. The ad will run on Google and several travel blogs this week to let potential tourists researching Canadian summer vacations know that the Canadian government still sponsors the annual seal slaughter, which just concluded in Newfoundland. World leaders as diverse as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and His Holiness The Dalai Lama have spoken out against the controversial massacre.

wow.thats shocking...
i wish for some changing position for anyone on that ad

Pombooie's picture 378 pencils

Brilliant ad. Brilliant awareness. Agree with the above on both statements. If ever there was a time to stop a barbaric practice this is it. I simply cannot believe that this still goes on. Shame on all those involved in such a vile and heinous industry. Canada should ban it immediately!

dsklan's picture 1789 pencils

this is no good ad, if you do an ad against dead penalty it would be in bad taste to show real people beiing executed...
as well as Human dignity is inviolable, so is the dignity of the seals...
and there are much more effective ways than just showing cruelty

JopyCunior's picture 169 pencils

i don't agree.
metaphors are good for useless stuff to sell, which is 90% of our work.
accidents, violence, abuse have to pictured as they are to stop them: by producing empathy.
it's just a documentary, it's shocking. nothing amazing, i agree, but the point is "to shock". in this terms, it works.
gotta go check the website :)

Guest's picture

Idiocy like yours should be banned immediately. If you are ignorant about the subject, shut up. Put a few provocative images together in a montage and that's a brilliant ad? Your standards are way too low buddy.

wtf is this

besnik's picture 111 pencils

Well, why are more ads for the animal rights and not for the human rights? Is this propaganda?

People have the right to make choices and know the difference between right and wrong, a seal does not. No animal says to itself "If I do this then that will happen" or "How I act will influence my behavior and will lead to..." Also, it is possible that one that senselessly kills is more than likely to participate in this barbaric event the following year and the year after that. Then maybe they'll get tired of clubbing seals and take their frustrations out on those around them.

The people who participate in this obviously have a mental disorder. Maybe they should stage the beating and death of someone that they love and maybe they will have a change of heart. I feel nauseous just trying to understand the subhumans that participate in this.

Powerful ad!

people are so stupid. It is a necessary evil and done in the most humane way possible.

Shawali's picture 5426 pencils

Very shocking indeed.

Thing is, I don't know anything about seal hunting. For what purpose? Are the seals close to extinction? I hate to see these cute little things being butchered as much as the next man . But i find this ad utterly dishonest. Just showing ogrish images, with no context, no explanation.

But hey, what do you expect from PETA, who are stupid enough to come up with nonsensical concepts such as "animal rights".

PETA is to the liberals, what the creationists and neo-cons are to the conservatives. Just some more American crazies.

There is no such thing as "animal rights", but humans do have duties toward them.

And they're the only thing that makes me troll... Dang, I don't like them! =)

Seal hunting is barbaric. It would nice if there was some insight about what the dead seals are used for. Regardless, this ad certainly won't help the seal hunters gain sympathy, so I guess the agency's job is done.

Sheep, pigs and cows are lovely creatures too. I'm sure putting together a 60 second film about they are killed would be equally abhorrent. Are we holding our selves to a double standard? Makes me wonder.

i have a question's picture 73 pencils

F**k. I can't see it more than 5 secs. Its pathatic. Motherfu**ers.

Guest's picture

I'm not educated on the seal hunt but I am a believer in cause and effect.

Are seals overpopulated?

Would seals destroy other related ecosystems if not left in check?

Of course an extremist could argue that humanity is not left in check but the reality is we usually need to come to some conclusion about how to deal with situations like this because no other organism can (at least not naturally).

The seal hunt is something worth researching for sure. PETA uses propaganda just as any other extreme organization and to follow them blindly is to follow bias.

Guest's picture

F#CK the ad agency who did this. Don't you use my national anthem for your own purposes. I care about all animals, but don't muddy the issue by bringing national shame into it. Hey, Peta, why not do an ad showing a baby being aborted and play Joy To The World. It would be just as fecking pointless. Oh wait, you don't give a sh1t about people. Morons.

Guest's picture

I agree, why must they bring in the national anthem? It's not like the whole country is in support of seal hunting, I for one have never been aware of this until I've visiting this site. I think its pretty low to just take one's pride and glory and dirty it by showing such abhorrent videos. This ad was not done in good taste though I guess the main objective of this ad was to shock its audience, that objective was met.

Guest's picture

Whoever thought it was a good idea to use my national anthem should be dragged out onto a piece of ice and clubbed.

Guest's picture

Whoever thought it was a good idea to use my national anthem should be dragged out onto a piece of ice and clubbed.

Guest's picture

What agency did this? Was it done in house?

Guest's picture

Why did they cut part of the anthem out? Oh, and also PETA kills animals themselves. They're insane.

Where is the P.E.T.A. where you need it?
And I mean the Proffesionals for the Ethical Treatment of Advertising...

This is propaghanda at its best.
So, "If you travel to canada... your hands are soaked in blood!"??? too much.

I don't support violence in any way, not even when is trying to sell awareness.

So, the life I have made may seem wrong to you, but who asked you anyway? It's my life to ruin, my own wreck.

Guest's picture

PETA's reality based film rightfully does its job in the first few seconds itself i.e ignite anger, instantly. The message is clear - STOP SEAL HUNTING. I don't think a soft / creative approach to this would achieve the objective! After all you've got to be really PISSED & DISGUSTED to then sign up for PETA's campaign against this mass slaughter of innocent seals who quietly lie down awaiting their turn to get butchered. And moving a 'lil away from advertising I suggest PETA get themselves guns. And use them to shoot the bal*s off these hunters one by one. I'd love to support a campaign like that!!!

Guest's picture

Que malditos como pueden hacer esto, ojala y tuviera en frente alguno de estos cabrones!!!
Es una pena que siga pasando esto a esos pobres animalitos que no tiene nada que hacer, ni como defenderse.

Guest's picture

SHOCKING. But more shocking is the dehumanized nature of "homo sapiens".

AssassinX's picture 1347 pencils

I don't know how I went through this video.
Just want to cry at the end of it.

Guest's picture

It just seems to me that these people, seal hunters, whalers, dolphin hunters etc only understand violence. Maybe it really is time to kill some of them.

Guest's picture

They should do something similar, like play the Star Spangled Banner/God Save the Queen and show US and Brit soldiers clubbing Iraqis. I'm against cruelty to animals but I think slandering the national anthem of a country is akin to burning flags. Extremely bad taste. Another strike for Peta in the minds of lots of people.

Guest's picture

The lowest form of making a point. All emotion, no reason.

Guest's picture

This is not a good ad, it's just a shocker. Should I stop visiting the USA because they still have the death penalty or that they illegally hold people in Guantanamo bay. Should I not visit China because they have the death penalty and eat dogs and cats in some parts of the country. Should I avoid going to France or Japan because they like horse meat. Seals are an abundant source , actually they have depleted certain fish stocks, that most people eat! Yes the method is probably not great, but the reasons are justifiable. Now compare that with the death penalty , is that justifiable? Don't be hippocrats Please.

Guest's picture

"reasons are justifiable"
...
Wow... please shoot yourself. No need for more retards on this earth.

Guest's picture

PETA is about preventing "cruelty" and barbaric treatment to animals; they're not about not killing animals, killing animals for food and other purposes is fine but it must be done humanely and not like how they do it in the video.

As regards the advertising, it's more of a miniature documentary than an ad and it doesn't really explain why the seals are being slaughtered, but irrespective of the reasons it is barbaric and cruel and must be curtailed.

Guest's picture

Well, you did show your concern for the slaughter of the seal ... how about several other animals, which are slaughtered for food ... like halal chicken, beef, sheep for that matter?

Guest's picture

Sad.
...
But wtf with this:
"...Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and His Holiness The Dalai Lama have spoken out against the controversial massacre."

"...His Holiness The Dalai Lama" ??!!
Seriously? Really??

wow... author needs a head check.

Guest's picture

I dont support animal cruelty in any way, but I really dont support peta either, they are extremist motherfuckers, there are better ways to care for animals and doing somehing about problems like this, instead of relying on fucking peta

Guest's picture

I believe that how they kill the seals should be legislated. Gratuitous violence is never acceptable. But guess what? They don't just kill them to sell the pelts, they actually eat them. So if all of you complaining have never been to a slaughter house for cows, I suggest you go and also become vegetarians at once.

4000 years old tradition,
quick & painless death,
hunt of the whitcoat is banned since 1987 (The first image you see in the video, the one not getting killed, but oh! so cute...)

Silver!?!?
Get real!, this is propaganda.

If the pigs you eat were killed in a slaughterhouse with a white floor and you'd let the cameras in, you'd be more shocked.

"We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species. Those who are moved by the plight of the harp seal could also be moved by the plight of the pig - the way they are slaughtered is horrible."

-Jacques Cousteau

Guest's picture

Well maybe someone should make a video of the American national anthem and have videos of their military interfering in foreign countries, destabilizing their governments so they can move in and exploit their resources while the people of those nations live in poverty and are forced to feed on each other to survive. If you don't understand the background of the seal hunt, do some research before using the media to create a sensationalist response in the public. It is no different than hunting in the States... come on! Really.

Guest's picture

can not believe ...this thing happen in this world ..in our world

sad to see ...
sad to know ...
sad to some humankind...

funny, replace those seals with pigs, cows or whatever any other animals that *human* eat on a daily basis. And this ad doesn't deserve Silver.

It is not a good ad, it is a sad ad.
But it brings out the truth that people still doing that in somewhere of the world.
Even we don't see this happen everyday, it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

How does this visual rape deserve silver? And why is it okay that an entire country's national anthem is used for such rot? I bet if it was the fucking star spangled banner the bloody Americans would be in the country that made the ad, shooting everything on sight and claiming terrorism. Such arrant nonsense. It's organizations like this that are the real terrorists. PETA sickens me.

disturbing!

Guest's picture

If you don't like it don't watch it. Tough shit.

Guest's picture

I think that the ad is successful as it provides awareness to something we might never know is happening. It might prompt a few activists to do something about it. Either bring to task the employers who clearly could be prosecuted for animal cruelty, and alter the way the hunt... for whatever reason, takes place.
My first reaction was repulsion towards the men doing the killing.... and indeed wrote a response which was not too productive. This is not the answer. We are here to make comments about whether we think the film works or not. To my mind it does.

Guest's picture

can not believe.

The barbaric blows of those clubs does sicken me. Would someone suggest electricity, or bullets like food some food companies?

But in all seriousness, to turn a blind eye to meat and chicken processing plants... come on! wake up!!!
I would like to see them try to step one foot in one of those plants with recording equipment.

In one sense it's well done and in another sense it isn't.

I think there are two kinds of people in the world. Neither group is right or wrong, good or bad.

It is effective for reaching those people who are controlled mostly be their emotions. They see these horrible images and say "THIS IS EVIL, IT MUST BE STOPPED!" And they absolutely mean it. No questions need to be asked. And they may be right.

For the people who need to know context, who need to know the whole story, they immediately get suspicious. They want to know who these people are, why they are killing these seals, etc... They won't make a judgement until they know the whole story. Because there is no context, no information given, they feel like they are trying to be manipulated. For those people the ad doesn't work and is probably counter productive.
