I understand that this is for military overseas absentee ballots. But is mixing "gun" imagery and politics so sexily really appropriate for America after what just happened in Tuscon?

This works, it relates to the military audience, and it does it in an interesting way, not boring them.
Its not a bad idea to relate guns to voting in this case since its for service people
