Of course there is a parody out there already.

Worth every penny? Like 600 bucks? No, thanks. I'd buy a whole computer (not just a laptop) for that amount. The iPad is another slick overpriced gadget by Apple. It does pretty much the same things the iPhone does, but on a larger screen.

I have one and it's more than you think. I was surprised to find out too. It's worth every penny.

I think we should discuss the advertisement here. Not the product.

For once I agree with you ;)

For someone who MAKES things, an iPad is unnecessary. It doesn't do half the things a small laptop does.

But if you just want to email, play little games, and surf the net (which is all fine and dandy), then it might be a good (but expensive) option.

For instance, I just bought one for my Grandmother.

And, per this spot, the Kindle is a much better eReader. And for more reasons than just the sunlight issue. The Kindle is teeeeeeny, and if you read a lot of books, it's a much better option than an iPad, or actually carrying a book.

All that said, we'll be seeing a convergence in the next couple of years where the Kindle will get some of the "magazine" and video features the iPad currently has, and perhaps the iPad will have better "text technology" so you can read long articles and books on it without having to take an Advil for your eye-headache.

(PS, I think this spot is almost as good as most of Apple's work. Which is a compliment.)

It's true. iPad is for consuming media, gaming, etc. But in this regard it's better than an iPhone or a laptop, because it's more portable, lasts longer and has a larger screen which also allows for better interaction. The Kindle may be better on the beach in direct sunlight, but people do not really read in those conditions very often. In every other situation the iPad provides better reading than a Kindle. It's best to get an umbrella anyway, too much sun causes skin cancer.

Ivan, your last sentence (comment) cracked me up! lol "Too much sun causes skin cancer", so who cares that the iPad doesn't do well in direct sunlight? You're gonna need an umbrella anyway. I think Apple should use that in their own iPad vs Kindle spot.

I saw this on a news site and I think it's a brilliant spot (not the parody). Very effective and it'll cost Apple some sales (that will go to Amazon).

I think this is a good ad - and it is necessary to discuss the product here. I've never seen an ad that compares such different products. the kindle is a reader - the iPad is a computer. I'm not sure about the Kindle's USP being the low price (it costs Amazon more than that to produce, but they're counting on you making up the balance with book purchases).

By the way, do we know what agency/if an agency did this?

Yes. Credits please?

The spot itself is excellent. Good old fashioned comparative marketing. I liked the sun glasses joke. It's true some designer shades retail for well over $200! Finally, I applaud Amazon for taking on the all mighty Apple.

You take a very good looking girl in a bikini.
She does nothing but smile and say twelve words.
Mad sales.

$139 is very approachable compared to $600.
Yes, it only does books, but for $600 get a laptop, or a cheap car.

Take one good looking woman in a bikini.
Have her say 12 words about a product that she cannot help but smile about.
Money.

I'd say, being only a Junior, that the ad itself is easy, but believable.
Plus, the Kindle is only a book.
People who want an e-book rather than a superior product that costs 4.32 times more will buy it

Don't like the ad. Terrible old fashioned comparative marketing. Next round he'll be reading a book, which reads even better than a kindle and costs less than his socks. This is comparing two totally different products so you can lift on the iPad's popularity. No.

Hehe, you're partly right, and that's actually a good idea for a bookstore ;p just like this was a good idea for Kindle ;p

I like the ad, but my last thought is my shock over paying so much for sunglasses. I'd rather learn more about the Kindle.

Nice idea. However the woman's acting (or rather overacting) sucks. All those little "persuasive" smiles etc are pathetic. Hey Bezos, next time, bring a porn actress on.
