Umm...it's, well, KINDA neat. But, are you selling paper clothes? I mean, for an ad about clothing, wouldn't you want to show, you know, clothing rather than illustration? Maybe it's just a culture barrier that I'm fighting, but this ad, I don't dig whatsoever.

Please do NOT encourage them by saying things like "neat" lest we see more of this type of mindless assault on the senses without even a modicum of any real idea.
This is the kind of work that gives "fashion" and/or "retail" advertising an undeserving bad name when there are clients out there trying to prove otherwise. Harvey Nichols is one of my all-time favorite advertisers who's doing just that.
And to your point, showing just illustrastion rather than clothing can "sometimes" still work brilliantly IF the concept warrants it. Case in point: Levi's award winning "Slim Jeans" campaign which just showed drawings of stick figures in motion.

This campaign is a sheer insult to the category when there's so much room for creativity.
I totally don't dig it, either.

Let me clarify, by 'neat' I mean interesting to look at, if it weren't an ad.
This ad would work for a certain demographic in the sense that, a lot of people looking for high-end fashion, are simply looking for something interesting to look at. They think, "If the ads look cool, the clothes must look cool as well." It's definitely not an ad I would have designed, but I bet it will work on a certain type of person.
Levi's stick figures ad is a different case entirely. Everyone across the globe knows what Levi Jeans are. They have branded themselves as being jeans so effectively that most people forget that they make anything but. They really don't need to show the product, just the name. These guys (whose name I have already forgotten) can't get away with such advertising.
I do agree with you as it being an insult to the category though. This could have been done much better, in my opinion.

You make total sense.
I can see how this kind of stuff might work for a certain type of audience.
Personally, I just can't stand looking at ads that are all style/design and no substance.
But then, they can argue that that's exactly their strategy. In that case, I suppose they've succeeded rather admirably...

i like fashion, but this one doesn't appeal me.
although i might go to the store out of curiosity.
