Regarding the style. I know it's supposed to be cheesy and realistic (unphotoshopped), because that's what those TV shows are like, but I'm not really sure it works (for me) on the aesthetic level.

No, I wont.
Many consider winning an award at Cannes Lions equivalent to winning an Oscar for a movie,
and that is the reason it is rightly termed as the "Mecca" of advertising. All it lacks is a bible ;)

I'd say they both have a very similar approach in execution, since both ads are talking about being "in the spotlight", as in on camera or on stage. Hence the two ideas are way too similar to ignore. Therefore not a very new or different approach.
