Birds attack lures anyway..

You're right - therefore the ad is based on a truth.

That might be the case, but why tell us something we already know?

Snagging/catching birds is an annoyance, therefore we don't want a lure that will catch them.

They've done a pretty good job of selling me a lure by not showing me the actual lure or the fisherman - but a bunch of pretty savvy critters that fish.

Advertising something sometimes requires a bit of exaggeration - like a guy parachuting from a plane, landing on his leg, it not breaking, the skin shredding off, all because he drinks chocolate milk - get my point?

I know what your saying, but stronger bones is something we all want with the corresponding product.

So the benefit ideally should be positive, whereas this ad is showing a negative, we want to catch huge gorgeous fish with our lures, not birds or other creatures etc.

If I were to go down this route, I would try and do it in a funny way. Like showing these creatures being tricked/fooled and take the micky out of them. :)

For a start - who's to say the proposition of the brief wasn't 'the most lifelike lure in the world'?

I'm looking at a genius ad on my wall. It's an ad for Playstation 3. It is f'n awesome. Probably won a lot of awards. It's a nuclear explosion that has morphed into the shape of a clown. Sad, literal people could complain that it's a nuclear explosion and as such the ground would become contaminated and people would die. Negative for sure. Glorifying war etc, etc = bad. I look at it and say: "Wow, that's how f'n cool PS3 will be"

These ads aren't the greatest ads in the world but they tell me they're realistic lures - so realistic that animals that love fish will be fooled. You want to do a campaign of the biggest most gorgeous fish you'll catch then I'd say it's been done to death and as such isn't interesting. If you're worried that millions of snakes, otters and herons will die as a result of this campaign then I suggest you stop taking ads so literally. We're supposed to be on this site to celebrate creativity, not think like clients.

A good ad doesn't have to show the positive to be positive.

Your not getting it are you.

I've fished all my life, well since I was about 3, and this will certainly not make me want to buy their lures. Particularly the part where they're proud to trick other creatures into eating it. As I've said before, catching a bird is a real hassle! Also, even the ugliest of lures that look nothing like a fish catch birds too, does that tell you something?

Yes that PS3 ad is cool, and no it wouldn't result in many complaints as a Nuclear explosion is an extremely rare occurrence that it wouldn't worry many of us.
It's comparing a rotten apple to a stale scone.

'A good ad doesn't have to show the positive to be positive.' - When it's a brilliant idea then fair enough.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to break in real quick and let you know that I enjoyed your debates. That's all I wanted to say, really.

I love looking at smart, conceptual and witty ads like everybody else, but I probably like reading an intelligent and logical thread of discussion about an ad even more. You both make a good point and are very articulate. And I admire that.

That's all. Argue on boys!

I agree with mmackinven. Birds (and otters probably too) do eat lures and die a horrible death afterwards. I find these ads thus disturbing.

Huh? this is really a psycho-champaign. It's like selling drift-nets for catching tunas and say "free dolphins on each!"
