With your question you look like the guy on the left of the ad. :p No hurt feelings. Peace.
Hi Tommy. If this was a really old school ad, the headline would be something along the lines of "Women find men who read much more intriguing." The well-read guy is just a paunchy little runt with bad taste in clothes, but it's he who has the lady's undivided attention, while Mr. Smooth stands off to the side holding her drink like a hired hand. It's promoting reading not on the basis of altruism or guilt, but as a thing that gives you (possibly dubious and comical) advantages.

GRRREAT!
they showed me a picture & i laughed
dignity has never been photographed
My favorite of the three, specifically because it pushes farther than the other two to suggest the uneven distribution of bookishness within the population, and its results. I'm not sure I agree with their conclusion. But the idea is stated winningly, in a fresh and funny way.
Perhaps best of all, it almost looks like these people stood around a photo shoot for a day or two with bookshelves on their shoulders; the immediate aftertaste isn't of more Photoshop magic filter atrocity.

"the other two to suggest the uneven distribution of bookishness within the population, and its results"
you are reading too much into it. none of that is actually meant.
Maybe I should have said illustrated rather than suggested. But whichever, if the fact that the short fat guy with the loud check sweater and a head full of books gets the girl in this little scenario DOESN'T suggest or illustrate to you the advantage of bookishness over booklessness (with Mr. Suave standing in the background with little more besides a TV Guide and USA Today on his shelf), you'd better look again.

I stand corrected.
I wasn't paying close attention. Both the visuals AND the copy support that.
:)
Where you been, dude? I had noticed you hadn't been posting hereabouts, at least not much in the print section. Anyway, WB. :)
