You clearly missed the point.
No the message is very clear she lost so she is crying, it is the exact reason they did not want to use an onion, because then is she crying because she lost the competition or because of the onion or because of both? This ad is just not good, don't matter what he is cutting.

i think the idea here is the old stunt "oh no i´m not crying im like these because im cutting onions" but in this case you are not cutting any onions, so theres no excuse, you are really crying because you loose blah blah...

Nice concept.. The inside of the pepper is heart shaped. I think that the copy could have done a better job of bringing it together.
