It's codfish, dry codfish. And it's written on it "In the XIII century, when the vikings came to Aveiro (portuguese city) to get salt, they gave codfish in return. Unlike what one might think they were the ones..." probably it would continue saying that they were the ones that originally start to conserve codfish like that and not the portuguese, etc.
