Can someone please explain this ad? I understand everybody want's this trophy and they chase the car to get it, but why all the chaos (hurricane, tigers, romans...) What does this have anything to do with football? and what is that round thing flying over the tiger ? (the photoshopping could be a bit better as well). If they were only american figures I would understand (for the american football) but they're not. This is a bit unclear for me....

They represent the names of the teams.

Cowboys, Bears, Bengals (tiger..just in case anyone didn't...you know..), broncos. et all

Doesn't make it any better but that's why they're there.

To explain:

The Heisman trophy is the most coveted trophy in NCAA football. That's American college football to the uninitiated.
The pursuers are actually the emblems/nicknames of different college football teams.
As a sports fan, part of the fun is identifying the teams. I.E. The Michigan Wolverines running alongside the truck.
I can imagine if you're from one of the NCAA schools, it's also a thrill to see your team represented in the ad.

It can be engaging though I'm not too hot about how this was laid out. I'm a sports fan and NCAA fan but I wasn't that thrilled with this ad. It just isn't as bad as other people are making it out to be, It's just that it plays on the same insight (for a different market but equivalent emotional value) as the Virgin Records' "Do You See Music" ad from a couple of years back and the M&Ms movie website. And those were better done.

As for the negative reactions, I think most of them are unfounded because I think this ad, while not spectacular, hits the target market right. I saw the TV spot for this over at Best Ads and I found it really fun. Much better than this print version. On that spot, I especially loved the Yellowjackets which I felt was a nice touch. It was a kick trying to identify the teams.

So, try not to be know-it-alls guys. Its so easy to piss all over any ad but sometimes we forget we are not the target market for most of these ads, and we don't know everything. At least ask before saying it's stupid. It's not. Unimpressive maybe but not stupid.

As for any Americans not enjoying the negative (albeir overzealous) reactions, now you know how the rest of us feel when your judges ignore cultural insights, or choose not to take time to understand an ad when looking at, say, Asian ads. Not everything is universal.

The Elephant- Crimson Tide (they use an Elephant for a logo)
The Black Spinning Ball is indeed a rock. May well be The Rock from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania but there might be a better one. In the TV, it was a rolling boulder. There are many teams using the words Storm, Devil (or Demons) and Cyclones as well.

Try these for a guide: http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/

That doesnt make any sense. Youre comparing apples and oranges. Get over the americans-are-evil propaganda the rest of the world is spewing. If we didnt march into paris and liberate the french the rest of the world including you wherever youre from would be speaking german now. Dont be so ignorant...

As for the ad. The idea is ok, but the execution is terrible. It just looks like a bunch of animals and a guy on fire chasing a truck. Absolutel doesnt work. It needs to be much more stylized, probably done with digital illustration for this idea to work...

"It just looks like a bunch of animals and a guy on fire chasing a truck..."

I think that's EXACTLY what it's supposed to look like given the headline, don't you think?
I also like the fact that it looks like one of those huge famous oil paintings of a battlefield scene.
I think you might lose that gritty, raw energy of the sport if it were digitally stylized...
I've seen similar ads done before, but this one FEELS right. It may look a bit too busy or messy, but then, it's a messy sport!! Great sponsorship piece.

Why do you still keep using World War 2 as an excuse for the attitude of USA as a country? Most people living in the US now dont even know what happened there, for them it is ancient history and they will only use the two letters en one number to defend their own stupidity. "yeah well, if it wasn't for us....." Yeah, you don't know. Life has a habit of sorting things out. If the americans didn't had their lucky assault on The twin towers..eeuhm I mean Pearl Harbor (yes I do see a similarity) And did not went to war other things could have happened. I dont know what, maybe Hitler just died of natural cause, the empire fell because of lack of an hard leader. Maybe there came an efficient underground movement. You don't know. So dont use the second world war as an excuse to lift yourselve above us.

The canadians were a big help in the same war, the British did all the work in the sky, without them the G.I.'s would be mowed down, and you don't hear them bragging about it.

It was a terrible time, a black page. So don't use it as a way to elevate your people.

Sure, the americans were able to make a considerable contribution, because they were the last country to enter the war, and they hadn't been fighting for 3 years like the rest of us, and had their military almost depleted.

Yes they are the are powerfull (mind that the chinese have a larger army). But you feel that you need the rest of the world all the time, as if it can't look out for itself. And no, this has nothing to do on the subject of Hitler on this stage. It has to do with the fact that everytime somebody is in trouble you are there breaking it all up, shoving everybody at a side and saying you solved it. OK.. but when a country falls apart.. who come to the rescue? RED CROSS. and where are they from?
We as U.S. people just have a big heart. we like to help people it's our nature. sure there are rotten ones. but when it comes to push comes to shove We unite. different colors, different creed, different religion.

Twin towers example. after it got hit, everyone in NYC pulled each other and moved on. Tsunami in S.E. who came to the rescue.. sure other countries came as well but, we are there first. we send our best team toi help people. I know there are a lot HATERS out there but there are always gonna be HATERS everywhere.

try live in the U.S. for a while and see what you think. We welcome everybody with open arms.

yeah, do I need to example your customs and airport policy now? The problem is that te USA is arrogant. Yes you help first, but the offensive lady at the store that elbows her way tot the front too is first, but nobody is proud of her.

On February 9, 1863 in Geneva, Henry Dunant founded the "Committee of the Five" (together with four other leading figures from well-known Geneva families) as an investigatory commission of the Geneva Society for Public Welfare. Their aim was to examine the feasibility of Dunant's ideas and to organize an international conference about their possible implementation. The members of this committee, aside from Dunant himself, were Gustave Moynier, lawyer and chairman of the Geneva Society for Public Welfare; physician Louis Appia, who had significant experience working as a field surgeon; Appia's friend and colleague Théodore Maunoir, from the Geneva Hygiene and Health Commission; and Guillaume-Henri Dufour, a Swiss Army general of great renown. Eight days later, the five men decided to rename the committee to the "International Committee for Relief to the Wounded". In October (26-29) 1863, the international conference organized by the committee was held in Geneva to develop possible measures to improve medical services on the battle field. The conference was attended by 36 individuals: eighteen official delegates from national governments, six delegates from other non-governmental organizations, seven non-official foreign delegates, and the five members of the International Committee. The states and kingdoms represented by official delegates were Baden, Bavaria, France, Britain, Hanover, Hesse, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Saxony, Sweden, and Spain.

So no, the red cross is not american

I am not directly attacking America on its fear for outsiders, I can relate to that. Every wise nation would be a little bit paranoid after such events that happened recently. The thing I am a bit upset about is the way Americans (ok some not all) handle this. You can accept it and work on it, accept or ask help, you can fight it...But the thing Americans do, is putting up a big mouth, shouting that nothing can harm them because they are the greatest in the world. To me this is only asking for trouble. The arrogance of these people is dangerous.

America this america that, greatest of all. Dude, I have seen furniture in musea that are older than your country.
