The interpretations of not having a mustache are going too far from my point of view. And the characters are so different, from icons to generic figures... it's messy.
I think you're missing the point. They're meant to be generic without their mustaches. It proves that they owe some part of their iconic nature to their mustaches, underlined by the line "Mustaches make a difference".
