From the thumbnail it looked more like a marriage proposal. I don't like it, doesn't tempt me to go skiing.

I like it, its fun.

I bet it is easy for people who visit the ski resort to re-create this image. Kind of like the Captain Morgan pose. True, this is more specific so it can't be nearly as powerful as "The Captain", but I could see a prominent local display of user submitted photos mimicking this spot to help give attention to these resorts.
(Ideally, the skiers could find this same spot. Hopefully the spot is a genuine part of their resort.)

Extra thoughts:
I am another one who thought it was a marriage proposal at first from the thumbnail.
It is easier to recognize the medieval visual pun with this "knighting" pose when compared to the "sword in the stone" pose the other ad uses.
