how come he is looking at something in the dark without using the light, at first he should focus the light at the thing he is looking at, not?

I think he heard something and quickly turned his head. It was a reflex. He hadn't yet come to the realization that he must direct the light towards the thing he's looking for.
In brief, stop overanalyzing.
