i love both ads very much. Original way to sell a stupid umbrella! It's al about giving people something they will remember. Don't worry about why this umbrella is better then the other!

how. HOW?
how is this a good ad?
how is DEFECATION a way to sell ANYTHING, except perhaps adult diapers?
and even then it wouldn't sell, because it isn't abstract enough.

both ads are terrible.
they're basically saying:
EVERYTHING, with the exception of coal, is biodegradable. ergo, almost everything will end up, in some size, shape, or form, as part of the watercycle.
ISN'T IT A GOOD THING WE PROVIDE UMBRELLAS?

it's a stupid ad.

then i'm too stupid to get the subtlety behind it.
i apologise my head isn't as brainzed as other peoples.

Its not subtlety, it is insightful.

You were right about one thing; your stupidity.

ChuckNorris's picture

are you so stupid you can't understand a metaphor?

the ads say rain is full of nasty stuff, so the best to do is use an umbrella.

simple, ain't it?

Vetinari's picture

the data, on both counts, is inaccurate.

ChuckNorris's picture

why do you talk (write) like that?

"the data...blah blah blah"

Are you an account exec?

Ads aren't supposed to be taken literally.

Vetinari's picture
Vetinari

obviously not.
i'm not attempting to take this ad literally.
i'm saying i dislike this ad.

you like it, i don't.
why is that such an issue with you?

i write the way i speak/talk.
i see nothing wrong with either.

Agree, stupid ad.
Doesn't work, doesn't make me buy the umbrella.
I would not even remember the branding.

Actually the data does support the idea that rain is dirty.

http://www.wecf.de/cms/articles/2005/05/pfos.php
http://www.policyalmanac.org/environment/archive/acid_rain.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_rain

There's a head start.

The facts are that there is everything from pollutants from industrial activities to hormones like estrogen being found in rainwater these days.

Whether or not the ad is good is debatable, but the diagram and data is actually accurate. You don't need to pretend that you know all the facts in order to defend an opinion and if you do, make sure you're right.

Vetinari's picture
Vetinari

"are you so stupid you can't understand a metaphor?"
"simple, ain't it?"

that data.

i'm obviously not stupid. one would like to think we're above playground non sequiturs.
and if it was simple, i wouldn't be arguing the point.

You said you were stupid earlier, now you say you're not.

You can't figure out whether you're stupid or not.

If you can't see how these ads work, I'd say it was the latter.

Dude, I think you just said how these ads rock biscuits.

Nice arguing skills.

using that logic, i could argue for against just about anything.
if you can apply ambiguity to an advertisement, then i don't think it's doing its job.

Disco Munky's picture
Disco Munky

What's ambiguous about this. Is says that almost everything can end up in rain (in some form at least). And they use "Defecation" as their example, I see the link to being glad they make umbrellas. It's not a big leap and it's funny. "Don't get poop on you, use our Umbrellas". It works and it's a good way of making a boring thing......less boring.

I think you let that other dude get under your skin and are now lashing out with that big brain of yours at anyone you like. Makes you come over like a dick head. Nice.

Now put your toys back in the pram and move on.

Doin' it for the points

A. J. SMITH's picture

Thats absolute moronic bollocks, it isn't ambiguous for the simple fact that it has their logo on it.

Its saying OUR umbrellas stop piss water falling in your hair.

it is good because it has a really good insight, this art used to be in my physics book in elementary school and it brings nice memories. KUDOS!

that art was in every elementary general science book in every single GCSE Cambridge Board school in the world.
it doesn't make it funny, and highschool reminiscence isn't selling a goddamn umbrella.

perhaps you'd like to tell me where you got "didn't like high school" from what i said about the drawing being ubiquitous?

no. i don't think you would.
i think you'd prefer to sit there and say something you're desperately hoping will be perceived as amusing. it doesn't like like relevance has much to do with your comments.

Nope. Don't like it.

Not because it's trying to be original or funny. Not because it's a poo joke. Because it's just... odd.

And no, not insightful. Everyone needs umbrellas when it rains. Whether there's poo or ash in rain, we still need umbrellas.

Gotta be dozens of non-odd ways to hawk umbrellas. Probably even some that are also original and funny.

This is a good ad conceptually, really. The surprise element is the product. My 1 cents would be somehow
the colors don't seem right making it look overall a little dull.
