why black? blue (with reference to the union jack) would have made this more proprietory to the UK.

Black is a more morbid colour. Making the link towards the tragic bombing more accesible. If they had used blue the whole image would seem more joyinsh and more colourful. And that is not the image you want to achieve with this message.

...and let the poets cry themselves to sleep. And all their tearfull words would turn back into steam

i thought of that too, but a deep blue can be just as persuasive. then again you're probably right

Ornery: 1. ugly and unpleasant in disposition or temper: No one can get along with my ornery cousin.
2. stubborn: I can't do a thing with that ornery mule.

That said. Everyone is allowed an occasional bad day. I was attempting to be playful. I failed.

Good purpose, but really bad ad.

This did run and at the time it really made a point to those of us that live in London and especially those of us that were caught up in those bombs.

For those that are against the creative, it follows an ad campaign about London being for Londoners and they used the word London to show different aspects of the city and what could be explored. It was running at the time of the bombs and this is therefore a perfect example of using a style already accepted and changing it so much it stands out really well.

Obviously, living and working in London, this additional knowledge helps to understand the reasoning behind the idea. I realise that isn't a reply to your original comment, so that's below!

That doesn't mean you have to love it! I understand that. But it had a real significance at the time.

I think it still does.
