I have actually done this, albeit with 4 x 2 and 6 x 6 planks rather than an actual tree.

I went to university in a cold town. The house was very drafty but had a fireplace. One drunken night we stole a bunch of timber from a building site down the road. We got it inside quickly to hide it, but didn't have a saw.

So we just fed it into the fire as in the pic. The tricky part is, if the fire end is higher than the other end the fire will tend to go out. If it is the other way, it will tend to travel along the board and set the whole room alight. It took a lot of adjusting to get it right. But we did not freeze and could save our student allowance for dope and booze rather than waste it on heating.

Ahhh good times. Actually they were crap, but never mind that.
