i like it! looks scary, especially this one...

but why are there always dark-skinned people dressing as white people?

because otherwise the contrast would be so low that it would just look like somebody with really eff'ed up eyes...

great little idea here...playing to the notion of 'what would it be like to be ____' the simple concept works great for techy products that may be daunting to those who are unfamiliar with the product..therefore casting a great 'ease of use' quality on the spot.

even though i risk to sound cocky: nothing's impossible with the right art direction.

i just think a pale, blue-eyed fella with blonde eyelashes in a mike-tyson-kinda "costume" would look great, give the campaign a little je ne sais quoi and would go perfectly with ps2. just a thought.

never said it was impossible...its just has a lot more pop this way is all.

i agree tho...with the right art direction (not to say that the art direction here is bad) im sure they could have mixed it up a little.

it could and should have been done the way you describe it, addy

the way addy described it was just the reverse of what they did, but its still the same. most of these, have dark skin under white skin. your just saying they should have done white skin under dark. still the same 'pop factor' just reversed. actually, if you look closely...the dog spot has light toned skin under the dark dog hair.

so why again could and should it have been done the 'addy' way....no offense, just trying to figure out if im understanding you correctly here.

its all the same game..

I refer to >nothing's impossible with the right art direction.

Eyes can look quite different, for example they could have combined the eyes of a very old person with the kid (some visible small blood veins) or what about a female player with colored make-up on her lids inside the cleric.
Also I think a nice effect could be to make the eyes of the person inside/the player a little bit smaller or bigger than the real eye size of the "worn person" - his body would appear more like a costume.

ooooh..so "it could and should have been done the way you describe it, addy" was not in reference to "i just think a pale, blue-eyed fella with blonde eyelashes in a mike-tyson-kinda "costume" would look great"??

i guess you comment just doesnt make sense...because "nothing's impossible with the right art direction"...isnt a description.

also, they did make the 'costumes' eye hole larger than the 'actual' eye that we see.

not exactly, yes. I thought the idea could have profitted of more experimenting - in art direction and with different role models.

>i guess you comment just doesnt make sense...

haha - good one

>because "nothing's impossible with the right art >direction"...isnt a description

but it suggests that things can be improved, see above.

>also, they did make the 'costumes' eye hole larger than the 'actual' eye that we see.

not enough - also they did not play with the effect of a costume which is not completely fitting - so that it would look like a latex mask or such.

I've already mentionned possible solutions to ensure that the idea would work without that "black/white"-contrast.

that comment was in regards to this one...'but why are there always dark-skinned people dressing as white people?' i didnt mean to come off sounding like i believe that they have to be black under white...i was just talkin out loud.

bloody eyeball veins to depict an old person? i think that would probably be misconstrued as somebody who's playin video games absolutely rippin high...probably not the best move, albeit a more realistic portrayal!

although i do agree with your make-up comment.

i really dont mean to sound argumentative...maybe its the ambiguity of online chatting....? cheers

haha, legitimate demur - but maybe it would support the creepiness of the ad?

could be, cheers from my side too

Why a baby, a dog, a priest and some freaky white face thing? Shouldn't the "somebody else" be who you become when the play the games? A soldier, a rally driver, a skater, a ninja, etc? Some other PS stuff is along those lines and I think is heaps better.

Boony, know what you're saying. But I think that's taking it too literally, and the PS brand has always had a surreal edge to it. So I think dogs, priests, babies are in this case more appropriate than fighters, soldiers and sports stars.

Anyway, this is an old campaign. At least 2 years...

Would drop 'be somebody else' myself.

Yep the line was my other issue with the campaign but I didn't want to sound like too much of a whiny little bitch. I may be wrong, but I can't remember ever seeing a PS2 branding ad with a positioning line on it. That was always left up to interpretation.

Did this campaign ever win anything? I never saw it in any of the books. I guess when your PS2 stuff is up against TBWA Paris' it's always going to be tough.

All the PS2 ads are becoming quite cliched. Even a student would do these kind of stuff. Let's see something fresh PS2.

I couldn't agree less. PS2 ads are about as sophisticated as advertising gets. It was, what, 2 years ago that Paris won the Grand Prix with some PS2 ads, and every year I can remember PS2 work has been awarded at the highest level. Which top award shows have you been judging exactly, desi?
