The dog looks too cute, and almost humorous, for me to connect with the seriousness of the message. Maybe should have made him look like he's actually been through some kind of testing.

This makes no sense at all. They took an element of the theme (some cosmetic stuff) and change it to another one (some animal) to make a strange image. They don't not even look similar, absolutely no creative effort. The linked one at least something (toothpaste and mouse-tail look alike).
