AMAZING!
Totally amazing, that is how most of the people of the world think of other parts of the world, especially americans, i am not generalizing, they are just ignorant regarding other countries' cultures, they think they are the only people who eat "junk" and drive "junk". and the funny part that everyone still believs that we live in tents and ride camels in the middle east! :)

I love this Ad!

Guest's picture

I too like the ad. But if you think you can speak for the entire US and how they interpret the rest of the world, then you are just as ignorant as you claim Americans to be.

BollyWould's picture

Amazing!

I'm not generalizing or anything, but ALL people in the Middle East think they understand American culture because they've seen a few episodes of Baywatch while sipping on a Coca Cola. Get a clue man...I've lived over seas on 3 different occasions....Everyone is just as guilty of ignorance and generalization as the Americans.

VODKA! LOL

US = Snow, that shows how little the creatives have general knowledge of the perception of the world.

ivan's picture

It rather shows that you don't understand the irony of this ad.

OMG's picture

Pankajdaguy...interesting you would talk about knowledge of the world...that's not the U.S my friend...it's Canada.

What is the tiny writing just above Banks in Frankfurt? (west of fast cars- Modena)

ivan's picture

I think that's Switzerland and it reads Watches and Banks. Not a bad image. Better than Fat people.

Dot's picture

nope, thats supposed to be france. also snow is for canada.

This is from the Indian viewpoint, not necessarily anybody else's. This ad would be much funnier if it was done from the American viewpoint because France would be: Sissies with body odor. India would be: Telemarketers with body odor. Italy would be: Sissies with good food. England would be: Our good friends with bad teeth. Mexico would be: future Americans Etc, etc.

I wasn’t sure I liked being labeled “fat People” when I first read it. However it really changes in meaning when you apply perspective.
After having done a good bit of travel, I would say the fallacy I have come across most often about Americans is that we are unusually wealthy. Spoiled rich, over fed, over commercialized(that one is true) over capitalized. So in that context I can see how being fat is in some ways true. A “fat of the land” colloquial term.

The problem with America’s reputation to the rest of the world is that it comes from Hollywood and a media creation that doesn’t really exist. Normal American people(almost all of us) are a great deal like most all the other people in other countries. We care about Family, Education(most of us) a good job, a Car and a decent place to live. That’s really about it, the occasional Holiday is nice. But mostly we are going to work, paying bills and wishing we had as much as it appears to others we have. Hope I didn’t burst any bubbles.

The ad offers very broad generalizations, If you look you will see that the agency involved did take some good shots at some and were not so hard on others. I can think of some nasty generalizations of the countries that got a pass.

So bring it! That’s right I’m Phat.

I think the idea did need fallacious generalizations. That's the whole point.

The whole effin' point is that America ISN'T just Hollywood and Fat people. Canada is more than Snow... and so on and so forth. But a lot of people have such narrow perspectives of everyone else.

Hence, the need to watch Discovery Channel and better understand other cultures.

I do agree that they let a lot slide. And went overboard on some.

Absolutely fantastic ad. Congrats to O&M Delhi, esp to Suchitra & Danille for coming up with this simply intelligent advert. It relates to the common people and even my little 7yr old neighbours child can identify with it so well. She knows Australia is well known for it's Kangaroos & India is the heaven for Yoga etc etc! It's so simple and PUNCHY. Great work guys. Keep it up.

GREAT COPY!!! Yeah, that's what it is. I have seen the same thing in some funny pictures about two years ago. Seems like these sites are increasingly becoming a source for advertising creatives all over the world. Good it got a Cannes.
Another good lift was the "Puppy Lost" ad that got a Cannes in 2004. I found the same thing in caricature form in Google Search just a few months after the awards show.

So, guys you better some time on those funny pictures' site than be here.

Regardless of what you think of the writing or the art direction or the meaning, utimately this ad fails. Why? Because I can put any educational channel logo in the corner and make the same claim - The History Channel. The Learning Channel. Bravo. IFC. HBO. PBS. etc. etc.

Reminds me of my students' work. They can make a great one-off but they'll never be able to carry a brand through the ups and downs of the business world (while still being creative AND unique).

Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital. cheers!!

It's something that tickles a reader's curiosity and then draws him into reading further. In a world of split-second attention spans, it's an ad that captures a reader's attention for a whole minute and makes it worth his while. When was the last time you saw an ad that did that?
