Why should i use DHL again?
Shouldn't it be a fortune cookie?
Don't you think it can atleast be art directed properly?
Will hand writing hurt instead of typing?
What is this ad about again?
What does it all mean?
....too many questions for one ad.
Please tell me its not from an O&M somewhere.
: : mystique : :
there is no "again" in the copy.
I was asking a question of why should I choose DHL... (again) being the not understanding part.
=) not in reference to the copy.
Cheers

I agree with mystique. Is it a vase or a fortune cookie? Why is there a fusion of ideas here? I think you guys have been carried away by a mildly cool visual and tried to attach an idea to it, resulting in a convoluted execution. I like the simplicity of it though. You guys get an 'E' for Effort. An 'F' for Fluff.
It´s really trying a bit too hard. Which is a pity because the ad comes from the same people who did the Canneswinning DHL campaign "Hand" & "Truck".
i think you are not that bright mr. jb.
Perfect example of "Advertising for Advertising people". Just like the previous ads.
In that particular case i agree but if you mean "Truck" and "Hand" by "the previous ones" i think you´re more than wrong.
Even my grandmother got it.
And anyway -what´s so bad about advertising for advertisers? If that wouldnt exist, this site we are posting on would propably not exist either - and all the great stuff from the likes like TBWA/Paris, AlmapBBDO and so on.
Jean-Remy von Matt had a good point in his book regarding "Scams", "Fake ad´s" or whatever you want to call it; He said that ad´s that where produced for awardshows are like concept cars. And the awardshows themselves are like cars shows.
The companies show what they can do designwise, in new technologies, trends and what will be on the road in a view years.
How dull and unimaginative would this job be, if we only would produce safe and secure client approved stuff?!
And dont start the "fight for good ideas with the client" because if that would be doable in all sectors and services people wouldnt do Scams in the first place.
And i see it as experimentation as well - and what´s so wrong about experimenting?
Very interesting perspective on award shows. Thanks for sharing.
i think the vase broke because you didnt use DHL
whazamatter with you Mystique? Can't see (or understand) a good ad when you see one? (same goes w/ this Thu) Maybe coz you have'nt seen a fortune cookie before? the writing is in a chinese character stylized font, it may not occur instantaneously but it should dawn on you after a few moments. guess you did'nt catch on fast enough that it pissed you off. To the Jung von Matt guys...my hats off to all of you. that's a fine piece of kick @$$ work.
Whoa, hold up Ad Busta,
No offense to you but I think I got the broken vase bit. I just dont know why would there be a paper in it.
Secondly, It was ment to look like a fortune cookie for some apparent reason. So if you didnt see that coming,
you should be a shame of yourself and lastly... I didnt know there was such a thing called chinese font. If you are asian or atleast a hint of chinese I find that racial sterotyping! I even seen that used in a Japanese ad before so if you don't know your stuff you should do some thinking before you say stuff like that. Bet you don't even know how to tell the difference between a chinese and a japanese or a korean. I pity the ad industry country you work in.
- Hats off to phil for explaining one of the best concepts on scam ads i came about. Cheers mate!

first of all i thinked its a bad ad without idea but after 2mins i understood it =D
for thoose of us like mystic - explanations ;)
you didnt use DHL > the vase broke > you read that you have to use DHL... very simple... great ad
design is like a puzzle... I`m just trying to solve it now
Got the ad mate...
My thoughts were... you didnt use DHL> the vase like fortune cookie broke > why is there a paper in the vase? > I read that I need to use DHL... great... so why is there a paper in the vase?
;)

a broken vase is telling you that you will change your habits - just like a fortune cookie does. Thats quite intelligent!
like it a lot!
Simply brilliant. If you don't get this ad, I'd consider trying a career in the banking industry instead.
Did someone actually write "shouldn't it be a fortune cookie?" I will pray for you, my friend.
Dear guest...not verified
I would think you are from the bank itself to call it brilliant. Guess it works for the bank you work in.
Your prayers are answered my friend. ;)

mystique, news flash! everybody got the broken vase bit...it's the part where they likened the vase to a fortune cookie that got you all muddled up! you should be "ashamed" of yourself (next time man get your english right will ya) you may think of yourself highly MATE but dont stray too far up the clouds. get your feet firmly on the ground to better understand the ad. know what i mean? i didnt say "chinese font", i said "chinese (or japanese if you like)-stylized font". know anything about fonts? learn some..heard of chinese takeaway font? look it up my friend cause you seem to be the only one having a hard time getting it. Duh? get over the
"..great... so why is there a paper in the vase?" you say "I pity the ad industry country you work in", let us not discuss credentials or you'd be put to shame.
Ooo...credentials...big guy...touchy...
ok mate... will study up on my "ASIAN" stylized fonts (you are not asian huh?). Didn't know you feel so strongly about the ad. I guess you knew the guy who did the work. No offense dude, its just a critique. Some people like them some don't. Chill Mr. guess (not verified).

Very interesting forum. I think both side have their point. I think the ad has room for improvement. Why not try to change the color of the 'Ming vase' to some earth tone or brown which resemble the real fortune cookie. That way, we get the message accross and not losing the idea.
Mystique seems to be quite young...
Don't wanna hurt your feelings, dude, but: try thinking before writing a post.
And with "young" I don't meen your age.
Mystique, you're a dumb ass motherfucker with too much time one your hands. Why don't you go out and stare at the sun for a while.
the "unverified guests" are out of control here.
mystique, you've made a good point. rock on.
used abused and over used
first appeared in spoof poster
its a close up on a broken fortune cookie with a message: "are u sure you had chicken for supper?
The man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock to save time
I think you're trying to not see it too hard.
When I look at the ad I see a broken vase with a message inside like a fortune cookie.
It says "next time you'll use DHL".
As in, because this time I used someone else and my vase got broken.
Maybe I'm a genius... maybe you're all dumb... or maybe, you just think the rest of the world is stupid... one of the three have to be right...
I got it right away... you didn't use DHL, so the apparently "ming vase" broke (association would it be something like; ming = chinese = fortune cookie) thus you learn next time you'll have a better fortune using DHL
