...the art direction is not impressive...the locations/sets are boring and dry for all three...

Not bad actually. What if the little guy is standing on the shoulder of the character, whispering to his/her ear? You know, like your inner voice, with the magazine under his arm.
This will give the chance to play with them, I mean you can put the little guy somewhere else, like behind the spectators, with clue signs for the main characters or something like that. I know this was already published but its just a thought.
