This is great but it seems to me like the glasses are acting like binoculors. Really the glasses should improve their sight so they see normal again whereas everything is zoomed in.

Duh! If you wore glasses you'd know that's exactly what they do. Just because you can see clearly doesn't mean you can see far away.
