the photoshop work is brilliant!
I think that the dog isn't "redundant" at all. It is necessary because it adds interest to what would be an otherwise plain view of the grass and a kid with a cropped head. That would make the visual quite forced.
It isn't absolutely breath-taking, but it's a nice way of subtly showing that particular aspect of the product.
