Nah, it doesn't work. The insight doesn't hold much water. The art direction is has no relation with this idea.

I get the feeling they are trying to promote the idea: Get away from the celebrity-struck minutia and return to the music. If that's the case, though, I'll go to my music collection, not karaoke. And how long has it been since KISS wore the make-up, anyway?
