Behind the Scenes (Final Cut)

Published/Aired:
August 2007
Description:

Last month Google asked their users to help them imagine how an email message travels around the world by transporting a physical GMail envelope. Google received more than 1100 clips from 65 countries and they edited this video out of it.

Not now, no. I'll try rescuing it from a hard-drive that's crashed recently.

gosh, are you one of those people who have to dissect everything?
the turtle is a second in a 2.5 minutes video. and no one really thinks about that.

It really doesn't matter what the end product ended up looking like, Google achieved their objective as soon as people started submitting videos and getting their friends involved in helping them make them.

it's the perfect concept!
it's about showing that people who use your product care about it enough to make a video for your ad even without getting paid or being entered into some kind of price draw.
also it's about the core of gmail - getting messages from one individual to another throughout the world and sharing a feeling of community (that's why they started enlisting people only by invitations).
btw, don't forget all the media coverage they got for free by this little stunt (and it really didn't cost them nada)

I think it makes Google seem approachable and humane. It's a great strategy for a tech company.
