I'm pretty sure most phones would have been on silent mode, and not all would have whipped it out at the same time - which doesn't make this that effective if you were one of those not looking at your phone that very instant.

Scary. Effective. The tech is possible thru Geo-fencing - but I think one has to opt-in to receive the SMS message. I imagine the movie theater established a text capture method at some point before the Das Auto show started.
