Tyre swing

Published/Aired:
March 2007
Description:

Bridgestone wanted to herald the production of their 35 millionth tyre and talk about the success of the factory and its commitment to New Zealand. Rather than focusing on the massive contribution to industry and employment that this milestone signalled, They instead decided to highlight the special place that tyres have in New Zealanders' memories and lives. Pretty much everyone in New Zealand has a fond recollection of swinging on a tyre swing, strung up in a field. To announce that the Firestone factory in New Zealand had manufactured its 35 millionth tyre, they sent out a 'limited edition' tyre swing to 40 editors, radio DJs and other media types who generally have plenty of other things to talk about than the success of Firestone and their 35 million tyres.

yeah, those lazy Americans spell it "tire" - as in, "When I run too fast, I tire easily." And similarly, "I heard a loud 'pop' and I knew my tire had blown." From thoe same folks who brought you elevator vs. lift, asphalt vs. tar, sidewlk vs. pavement, and the list goes on and on and on ... cue the Eveready Bunny.

Adelaide agency Showpony did a 'tyre swing' spot for Bridgestone(Aust) last year.
Good to see the bush-kiwi telegraph is working.

Cute idea, though I think playgrounds, play centres etc might have appreciated them a bit more than middle-aged 'media' types who probably already have a spare tyre...

you really think play centre teachers would have been able to generate the buzz that middle-aged 'media' types can?? Dunno..nice spare tyre joke though..

Was there really a 'buzz'? About tyres? Hard to imagine.

I understand why they sent it to those folks, I'm just picturing hundreds of tyres sitting in peoples crammed offices, only to be rolled out during the Christmas party...for the swingers (okay, sorry, that was bad...)

Especially when tyres rates way up there with dentists when it comes getting excited about them.
