Long hours, no rewards

How true is this in advertising? I mean, sometimes you don't have to be a CD to get paid insanely high, and yet we see entry level creatives who are basically lapdogs and don't get paid for anything.

I have a banker friend who scoffs at aspiring people who want to go to advertising. He'd roll his eyes and say "long hours, no rewards." Is he just stupid or is he right? Are we fools to get paid shit just so we can do what we love to do?

Your friend is right. It's easier to make a lot of money in banking. But then, who wants be a banker? No offense, but advertising is a lot more fun. And, it all comes down to the fundamental question: What is important for you in life?

Is it the money and the stuff it can buy you? Or is it enjoying your work?

When you spend a whole month doing what you enjoy, most usually you pay for it. In advertising you GET PAID to do it. If you're real good at what you do, your friend will be asking how HE can get into advertising.

I know bankers who enjoy their work as well. I think some of us advertising people tend to get very close minded and think that there is nothing better then advertising. I know computer guys who enjoy their job and i know firefighters who think there is nothing better then saving lives. Won't you rather be the guy who designed ipod then be someone doing ipod flyers?
