My advice is that if you want to be good at advertising and wish to stick around, choose a client, and then work on a concept for that particular client.
What you're doing is something that really, really bothers me - you're choosing a random image, and then just throwing clients at it, hoping that one of them will stick. THat's not conceptual thinking, it's cheating. You want to use this erection idea - and it doesn't work for energy drinks, so you're just going to turn it upside down and change the client and the entire message? NOt Good!! Because in the long run, you're not going to be able to pick and choose your clients like you're doing now, you're going to be given a client, and that's it - you had better be able to come up with an idea for that client.
Anyone can choose an image and then just flip through the yellow pages and find a client to go with that image. DON'T - it will get you nowhere!

awesome post. (although it applies to a lot of other exhibition ads here moreso than this one)
It's the underlying logic behind the spiel i give about finding a strategy/insight instead of looking to make a great ad. Creating ads inspired from an awards annual and throwing a client at it might help you get a nice looking book but I would consider it safe to assume a CD can recognize an original thought/insight first and foremost, and would consider that significantly more impressive.
PaulyG is spot on. So is weighter. A lot of CDs simply love a good strategic insight that has been executed with a marvelously creative idea (who wouldn't).
This ad however is a first level idea. You even pointed it out. Potency > Erection.
Keep brainstorming and eventually something will pop up.

U kno this idea was nagging me since quite a while... but now that its bad enuf to be thwacked most of u all... i think i've learnt my lesson... and how... thanx a bunch people... and this goes off my book.... miles away...
