Why does Pepsi need advertising?

I mean the brand has been here for years now.
I don't think an ad, be it good or bad, would affect my consumption of Pepsi.
I understand they have competitors (Coca Cola etc.)
But I prefer the taste of Pepsi, and an ad won't change my mind.
(Unless Coca Cola starts giving free tickets with every bottle)
Why would Pepsi spend fortunes on advertising, in spite of its success?

There are two main reasons:
1. People die and new people are born. You have to keep advertising to the new generations.
2. Top of mind awareness. If they keep hammering Pepsi to your mind, when you think of thirst you will think of Pepsi. If a waiter asks what you want to drink you will reply Pepsi.

I'm a Coke guy and nothing will change that, unless Pepsi gives me a big bag of cash. :)

i am agree with u.
i dont know about other countries but in india 62% people are villagers and uneducated and coke has captured their mind.like there is very common word call "thanda"(means cold)in villages and coke use tht "thanda" word in their all campagin.so whenevr they say "get me a thanda(cold)"it means his asking for coke and pepsi using gen-next theme in all campagin for all yo type people but coke in a very strong position rather than pepsi in india

To appeal the coming generations.
If Pepsi doesn't advertise...some people might ask "What is Pepsi"
For a brand to be successful...it needs to be visible constantly through advertising.

Out of sight, out of mind.

You like Pepsi and will never switch to Coca-Cola. Millions feel the same way. That being said, there are millions who feel quite the opposite, their brand loyalty being with Coke. Pepsi wants as many people to love their brand as they possibly can. More love, more money. For this reason they will and should continue advertising.

3. because public has a very less memory to retain anything. They forget anything after sometime. If you'll not advertise then you'll be in the books of history or any dustbin.

4. because it is more difficult to retain superiority then achieve. When you got no. 1 position then other inspires from you & then try to go ahead from you & off course you can't observe & stop anybody from doing this.

5. because this is race in which either you run or go home. No.1 position requires a lot of bugs to maintain.

Think, Act, Invent.

Dr. Pepper! I'm all for the "underdog". Even though it's tough to think of the multi multi-billion Cadbury Schweppes corporation as an underdog...

Advertising is investment.
So brands do not pay 100% of the bild ;]
