Which country has the best creatives?

Hi i'm coming from a small country GREECE, but it would be very interesting to converse on which country produces the best creative
work, although this is not really objective i think that it would be an interesting subject to develop.

I think every nation has good and creatives. But in general Singapore has excellent reputation.

hum! it seems you've very little knowledge of India and Indians. By the way for your information if you talk about copy so copycats doesn't belong to any specific nation. Ideas are being copied in many countries so this is not fare to blame a single nation for it. Disappointed by your comment. :(

wow. that's nice to hear. but to tell you the truth, most ads i see in S'pore are dull and really insults the intelligence of the viewer. care to share some big names frm singapore?

Well, the ads I have seen in Singapore are just sligthly above average of other countries, but the work in the books and annuals is exceptional.

I completely agree, even though I was born and raised here. A lot of Singaporeans think ads here are great, but as a student majoring in advertising, I'm beginning to open my eyes and realize this isnt the case.

No offence to anyone, but we have a hell of a lot of room for improvement :T

All over the world the same. The majority simply sucks. Always loved stuff from Switzerland, Argentina, England, Singapor, South Africa and some ads from the States.

I think London is still the best when it comes to creativity; many international campaigns for the biggest brands originate over there. But also look at what comes out of Paris, and Barcelona. In Germany good things are happening. Singapore has got great creatives but Bangkok and KL are getting there very fast as well. India is getting very promising. Middle East is embarrassing, as well as some European countries like Italy. Brasil is great, Tokyo disappointing, Hong Kong is out and the US is too self-centered but still win the most awards every year.
There is a list of interesting up and coming places like Dubai, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Shanghai, Mumbai.
Just check out the award shows and compare the winners of previous years. That you have to get out of Greece is obvious.
Also consider the agency you want to work for and who the creative director is. The best agency with the best CD could be in Alexandroupolis next year. Like Wieden+Kennedy ran a most succesful agency from bloody Portland, of all places. Or Crispin Porter + Bogusky doing the same from Miami; known for its vices but not its advertising.

I realized that the majority of commercials I love are Honda commercials....then realized...the agency was Wieden..then realized the agency was in London....

My vote goes to London.

USA has nice creatives and constantly push the envelope. there is a big market here so there is more need for the next best thing to grab your attention. i sometimes feel, however, that other countries are less limited in what they are able to do. It might just be the exceptions that i see on websites like these and other so i might be wrong.

Let us not mix awards with good creative. I think London is still the best in the world. Singapore is good as far as award shows are concerned but I have not really seen good stuff in real life. Same for India. Though it is getting better. US TV ads are generally crappy apart from the ones we get to see. Brazil is quite good, specially when it comes to art direction. Someone mentioned Dubai is good, they have one or 2 good ads a season, but I think they should do better. Problem with Dubai is it has not the best talent. We had a saying back in Hong Kong. Failed in London, Try Hong kong, or in short FILTH. Lot of filth in Dubai etc.

Beruto, you did not mention AMSTERDAM. Decent work, though I think most of the work of 180 is cliche, specially those adidas ads.

There are some creative agencies we never hear. Mother, St. Luke, BBH, Carmychael Lynch, Pyro, Cliff Freeman etc etc.

I forgot to mention Amsterdam indeed. They always have good, steady creativity going on. I agree about 180, not really up to the level of what other agencies do for Adidas. I have the same about KesselsKramer, they are very good at promoting themselves as the best but besides the Diesel stuff it's all a bit samey.

It was me who mentioned Dubai but as an up and coming market: last year a "filth" creative of an independant agency did win a gold at Cannes.

I think that's a simple question. USA that's the answer. They've created so many ads from 20's - that still rocks!
the other side of problem is NOT creativty big or bigger - is "open minded" with clients status...
thats the real question.
in USA they're not so problemtic as f.e. in Europe.
Im from Poland. We don't have problem with creation - we have huge problems with clients minds and budgets.

i dont agree with the above post. you can get great clients here who are happy to run lots - take for instance pot noodle, fantastic creativity, very open minded clients. of course you can get clients who want very safe stuff, you've just got to challenge them or just dont give them safe work. end of. it's as much the creative teams to push the idea and sell it in as the client to open their arms and embrace different creative.

doing that on friday - see how that goes!

It's not fair to compare the USA as a whole to other small nations just because of it's size of population. A fair comparison would be to compare USA vs India or USA vs Europe. See which one has more great work.

Sweden is really succesfull in producing great creatives compared to the size of the country. For exampel Mother New York is run by swedes. And they have some of the best Web-creatives in the world.

Which country has best creatives...hhhhmmmm as TS said, it's probably hard to be objective....I mean what kind of criterias do defines creatives in TS POV? The most awarded, the most productive, most fresh ideas, or the most campaigns etc. Hard to see the truth if you want to single out a country, it would be much easier to narrow them down to agencies, or individuals. Country have taboos, restrictions and culture (and religions, save USA and Europe), not to mention stiff-neck clients (who believe advertising is a waste of time and money they cannot do without)

If i have to point one country, i have to point at Thailand....and Japan. Thailand especially, I think is much superior to Singapore. i find that Thailand have sensibility in their creatives to their cultures and quirks as Japan have always done. No offence, Singapore looks great because they were seen in "understandable english" context.

i agree, it also depends on the clients' mentality.
some european advertising mekkas such as london and amsterdam profit by some clients' more "laid-back" mentality (though laid-back is probably not the right word in this context).
when rating a specific country's creative output we also have to consider that advertising hot spots usually attract good people from all over the world.

It depends, I think every country has it's share of good creatives. I'm from Romania and, as far as New Europe is concerned, we pretty much rock. But if I were to chose I'd say London. Gorgeous stuff coming from there.

Saatchi & Saatchi New York is doing pretty cool stuff now, just as Crispin. I would say the US. England has Fallon but even Mother is not what it used to be. But one thing is for sure: The best creatives are probably in the wrong place at the wrong time being totally ononimous. Being in the right country, the right agency and working for the right client is what makes great creatives great.
I live and work in Amsterdam and new hotshops are opened here almost daily. And there's W+K and 180. Still, I am not totally convinced that agencies like W+K, 180 or KesselsKramer at at their creative peak. Next to the US, I think the East (to us that is Thailand, Singapore, India etc) is showing nice work lately.

Hmmm, tough. I really like a lot of stuff I've been seeing out of Brazil lately, although I wouldn't say they're the best yet.

Honestly, it's most likely London or Singapore, although South Africa can also dish out some kick-ass creative.

When it comes to ideas,i think India is quite the dominant player.A tad laidback when it comes to execution though.American ads are no longer good.Singapore is also outstanding.

Personally I find eastern advertising to often be painfully obvious and unconceptual. Most of my favourite ads seem to come from France, those french are just so eccentric, quirky and free-thinking! I love it.

It is impossible to answer that question most advertising is created for a specific country which have there own type of humour, jargon, culture, stereotypes and visual iconography. Many adverts that win national awards do not fare well in international competition. At the same time some do extreamly well- for example the Hovis advert this year in the UK is highly successful- brilliant advert but it means more to someone who is British. Its difficult- Western Culture critics judge from a western media perspective. International friendly adverts will take trumps.

The reason first world countries do so well in advertising is also based around economics, major corporations were born from America and Europe. The Advertising gaints grew with them- although most are worldwide corporations now- its all to do with the corporate market.

Things to ponder- The worldwide Creative director for Ogilvy and Mather is South African.
David Ogilvy is British and started Ogilvy and Mather in New York.
He also said he was always was interested in applications from Eastern Europe as they brought a different type of creativity.

I dont believe there is specific country were advertising is best rather look at which agencies are performing well worldwide- As they are mixed with every culture in this international world but bigger is not always better- smaller agencies give you more responsibility and are able to make a fast creative turn around.

The United States' contribution to creativity at a macro level is much more significant than other countries. Being such a large country, we have to appeal to a huge diversity of people and tip toe the fine line of conservative and liberal values. Even more significant, I would argue, American creativity produced Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft-- many of the world's major global players that have shaped and will shape the context in which advertising operates. Granted, it's not a print campaign, but if we're talking "creativity", innovative business in itself is creatively driven.

Oh, and the U.S. won the most awards at Cannes this past year...and we definitely have greater restrictions than many nations whose consumers are much more open minded to more creative ideas.
