Weighter, hey Weighter, over here!

Instead of chasing you around the boards, I thought I would put a shout out to you here.
I haven't gotten that email from you yet. Maybe there is a delivery problem through this system?
At any rate, what was your question about? Was it about the ihaveanidea.org portfolio night?

Hey sorry no I didn't send it last night, after I finished work I was brain dead and just watched my beloved Edmonton Oilers get their playoff hopes trampled into the ground (along with my heart). Apologies.

Anyhow yes, I am contemplating attending said event in early May. I was wondering if you have any experience with it, and what your opinion on it is. I'm not looking for an agency position right now (or actively building a book towards getting one) but I would love to immerse myself in the industry for a night. Advertising was on my radar a few years ago however was offered a path towards broadcast design and art direction. It was a fulfilling couple years but not quite what i wanted. I entered and won a gold Ice Award for a young creative category (atlantic canada's awards show) and that really peaked my interest in the field even more. Lately I've been reading book after book on advertising etc, and the past couple months I've been experimenting with my own Spec Ads.

So is this event more driven towards people looking for positions with polished books and agency experience? Is it just a meet and greet and a way to get feedback on your ideas etc? I was fortunate enough to get a person working in Toronto to mentor my work as I come up with ideas/executions etc, and thats been a great help... and these forums have been decent in getting feedback.

SO to summarize my long winded self, I guess I'd like to know what your thoughts are on the event, and someone like myself attending. Beneficial? Highly recommended?

I'm not looking for a position right now, my life is tied into an entrepreneurial venture for the foreseeable future, but Portfolio Night looks like something I would really enjoy.

I understand the brain drain completely! I experience that every single night of the working week. Sorry about your Oilers. But you are talking to someone who has the Leafs to be ashamed of...

The portfolio event night is a lot of fun, so I'm told. These event is for jr. art directors and copywriters who are trying to improve their portfolios, and break into the industry, they show the best work they have and only the best work. It's a weird and exciting night. All the CDs and Sr. people keep their eyes out for the cream of the crop and offers are made to have another interview and sometimes, results in employment. Ultimately, I believe the juniors go to this to be seen and to try and get a job. It's an amazing opportunity to have one on one time with some awesome CDs.

You can meet lots of people and form relationships, working and personal with a variety of people who are in the industry. It's really what you put into it. If you prepare and you have business cards and your best work, it could be really great. Oh, and bring a pad of paper to jot down the suggestions so you can better keep track of what was discussed during your sessions.

Keep in mind that booze is involved and as the night progresses, people get tired and drunk and if your appointment is later, you might get a cranky and irritated CD who might not give you a good review. But each time is different.

I do believe the Portfolio night happens out closer to where you live, doesn't it? In BC? I can't check right now, because, once again, I'm blocked from a site. (I'm really quite pissed off right now. WTF? Why can't I get on an industry related website??? This place is nuts and so random.)
So unless you want to spend some money and come to Toronto for a trip, I'd go to the one closer to you.

Is it beneficial? You get alot of opinions and face time from CDs in one night - which is way better than setting up 5 or 6 different appointments on different days and having to deal with cancellations and forgetfulness, and interruptions from their staff - so I guess Yes, it is.

Is it Highly recommended? - I wouldn't say highly. I would say "mediumly" or "medium to luke warmly recommended"

Does that help? At all?

Thanks for that, indeed helpful. Actually i'm on the eastern coast (Newfoundland) and had planned on taking a trip to Toronto this spring regardless. I was there last year during portfolio night, but didn't even know it existed, nor did I even have any spec ads or general knowledge about advertising other than i really liked it. (I went to see a band play at lees palace named pinback, and to visit a friend).

I don't mind cranky people, my uber friendly personality and contagious smile will win them over! haha ;)

I really think I would like it. At the very least it will lay the groundwork for my development. Its quite possibly an advantage that I am not in search of a position considering I enter with a very open development oriented mindset I guess. I think I may invest time during my nights developing my ideas and presentations, just to show I actually care a lot about my work. Would you have interest in a link with some of my spec ads? I'd be interested in your critique and how far below the water line i'm swimming at in my first stab at it. (as long as you're brutally honest of course, i can take a good beating no worries)

If so, I'll send via email system and you can have a look whenever you get time.

once again thanks a bunch, you have been a good help :)

cheers
daniel

I would be happy to look at your link and make comments. Send it! I'll look forward to it.
I think you would have a good time if you went. You have a great attitude and with that, I think you will make the most of the night.
Sorry, because you said you were an Oilers fan I thought you were out West. My bad. I get a C- for my reading skills today.
Cheers to you! (mine is a Guiness)

Hey elle! sawry about the houdini act. I had to pull myself from the ad world for a while. my business venture required a lot of my time and being in love with advertising as I am, I needed to distance myself. that said, I didnt recieve an email from you. Apologies for the rude non existance of my being!

That is WEIRD!!! I sent you two emails, one day apart. I feel cheated. Are you sure they didn't go to your junk mail? Gah.
How is your venture going? Good I hope!

I have no idea, my junkmail from back that far has been deleted. Sorry again.

The business is still not much further ahead than it was. But as ive been told over and over again, the hardest thing about starting a business is getting it started. It's getting to the end of the planning/consulting stages. I'm exhausted.

Right. Junkmail folders get cleaned out. I wasn't thinking when I wrote that! LOL!

I think it's great that you are putting so much effort to getting your business started. I'm sure once it's off the ground it's going to be terrific! I can't seem to get my shit together to start mine. I've involved some family members now and they are chomping on the bit... problem is, I'm not. I need to find a non-narcotic solution to get some extra energy! After a long day at work, I don't feel like sitting at a computer!

Keep me posted on how you are doing! I'll see if I can find the email you sent me with your link and take another look at your stuff.
