question about new concept ideas for book

hi everyone!

i've been registered here for a while but i haven't posted anything in the forum before. my first post/topic, woohoo!!...

anyways, i thought i would come here to ask you fellow ad creatives if there's anyway to find out if an idea you come up with has been done before. i'm in the process of revising my book and i've been coming up with some new ideas i like but i always have a feeling it's too simply obvious that it must have been done before! should i just scamp/art direct my ideas up and just find out when i go out on book crits or should i just research on the web? i just thought i'd throw this thought out there.

i'm currently an art director getting my book together before i go and join some lonely hearts thing to find a copywriter. oh, has anyone had success or bad experiences finding a copywriter/an art director partner through these recruitment agency things?

any help would be appreciated :) take it easy you guys!

siempre gravy!

you can try posting your stuff in the "exhibition" forum. people here have a pretty good overview on what's been done and what not. or register to lürzers archive online and search (but that's costly). as for the copywriter thing: if it's "just" for putting your book together you might not even need a copywriter. if you have good (visual) ideas, people mostly get the idea with just a simple line, you can probably do yourself.

Hey, Siempre Gravey:

I wouldn't worry about researching whether an idea has been done before. You could spend a career chasing that! As long as you aren't knowingly stealing, let it fly.

The partner issue is more difficult - the right chemistry is so important.

You might want to post some messages at AdGabber's copywriter club, perhaps some of the appropriate groups on FaceBook ... see if you can find a writer in your boots.

Best of luck to you

Steve

thanks, steve!

yeh, i know what you mean about searching for 'done' ads. the amount of times i've been working on something and my copywriter would be like 'i think i've seen that before'. i wouldn't know where to begin with that so i just wouldn't bother, go against my gut feeling and scrap it. i would hate to think someone thought i ripped-off someone's idea.

on the team up thing, i had a bit of a good/bad relationship with my last copywriter but it was mostly bad because it left me so frustrated with our work and hit my confidence abit. hopefully i can recover and find someone who i can 'click' with.

cheers for the advice. i've got to check out those links!
