I like to follow a career in advertising. More specifically, i want to become an art director. Hard work i know. I was wondering what would be the best major to follow? My school offers arts new media, would taking courses under that major help me? What are the best major/minor combinations to get the best possible training for the field? Also, what are some entry level jobs in that field? I heard about copywriters and graphic designers making 18-20k a year, is that true? That's kinda sad.....
Thanks

in my place, u have to be graphic designer for one or half year before u can be art director. I don't know in other place..
If you think 18-20k is sad, than maybe your passion ain't that strong. You'll be overworked and underpaid for the first half of your career. Money shouldn't be your motive this early on.
For a lot of people money doesn't matter, and the wait is probably going to be worth it.
You end up loving the job and get great satisfaction in people seeing your work in the open, especially if they like it!

I'm saying it's sad because advertising is so crucial in the business world that should be more rewarding. If you think about it business makes the world go around, and marketing is what business relies on...but i know i would enjoy working in this field and the starting salary is not going to stop me.
can someone answer my major question in the beginning and what courses i should take? i have to register soon and i need to know =)
i don't know nothing about minor/major/whatever...but new media won't really help you become a graphic designer, unless you want to end up doing websites. most of the really good people i know just taught themselves in endless hours at home. no course in the world will teach you how to be creative, the practical skills you'd just have to learn (and it's going to take a while)
I disagree.
A good course can teach you how to open up your mind to be more creative. I went to this course http://www.mediadesign.school.nz/courses/creative-advertising/ and learned exactly how to get creative ideas and fine tune your thinking.
A lot of people go into graphic design hoping to become an art director, which isn't the right way to go.
Being an art director is all about ideas and directing studio to bring your ideas to life. Sometimes you end up with a junior mac op that has hardly any idea how to make things look good, then it's your job to make it look good under your direction.
On another note, in your portfolio you only want about 50% of your ads to be finished art. the rest should be hand drawn scamps/scribbles that show your idea well. This is what CD's want to see, how you think and interpret your ideas in pencil.

1. have good ideas
2. build a portfolio
3. don't think about the money. that's kinda sad.
Thanks for the help guys
but i have one more question. If i was to get a degree from the U.S and then move back to Greece(i'm greek) the degree would count more than from someone who went to school in greece right? Because i asked in a greek forum and they said a degree in from the U.S is always better and if you get some experience from there and then come to greece a lot of companies will wanna hire you. is that true?
It's all about the portfolio if you want to be a creative, more than where your degree comes from.
