How can outsider present a cool idea for an ongoing campaign?

Hey,
I am myself an advertising student from estonia and a couple of months ago i worked out a cool ambient ad for hummer just for fun. Now they are having a campaign here (tv-clips and banners). But what if i want to help them and to come out with a cheap and chic idea? Whom should I contact (agency or client) and should i meet them or send e-mail or phone...? Is it even worth to bother?

Contact the agency.

unfortunately, i don't think they'll listen to you and i wouldn't bother. here's why: there are confidentially agreements that go into using work. if you give them the idea they (the agency or client) might say "we hate it but thanks" then go and produce it later slightly changed. or someone at the shop might be currently presenting something similiar that you'd have no way of knowing about. what would then stop you from trying to take them to court? nothing except for the fact that you're a student and probably broke. but i digress...the best way to get someone to see your cool idea is to put it in your portfolio. then send them portfolio and see what they think. the fact that you're interested in their account may get them excited to meet you.

I think the first thing is to ask client if they are even interested in new ideas and not to bring out my solution.
If they are intrueged then i should consult with some jurisprudence student and work out agreement papers.
Finally I should meet the client and ask them signature for agreement paper (if they are not interested, then they commit not to produce my idea etc).
And finally I introduce my concept.

My advice: DO NOT contact the client. that'll piss the agency off. You can of course contact the agency, but don't get your hopes up. and besides, most creatives hate to work with outsiders...it's a competition thing...

but what I would do: I'd find out, who the creative director for this client is. then i'd send him a short excerpt of my portfolio (including the hummer idea, or at least one of them). if he likes it, he'll invite you to talk. if he doesn't, maybe your idea isn't as good as you think.

cheers!

I have already contacted the client (and guess what, he is studying in the same school, same speciality too). But one of my hummer ads is already done (discovered 1 hour ago, made by jeep, and the second ad reminds too much of another jeep ad (again!) and a social commercial, which are both represented in adsoftheworld. So my efforts are worthless, but its not a big deal :-)

I do not have an ad portfolio (you see, i do not attend to miami ad scool, lol). i have a photo portfolio, though.

too much testosterone.

cheers.
