degree in advertising

Is it necessary for someone wanting to be a copywriter to get a degree in advertising? Do these courses teach much in relation to copywriting?

just teach yourself. Look at every ad, every headline, read every book, every annual, practice and practice and practice, make ad after ad, campaign after campaign, at least 5 hours a day for 2 years...

it worked for me. Got a job at an award winning agency without anybody else's help. it can be done.

The degree isn't necessary, but I'm glad I did mine as it helped me get my foot in the door, and helped me to get my head in the right place.

Technically, this is correct. A lot more is needed than a degree though, this is why I say it isn't necessary. A love of literature helps, as well as tons of life experience, things like that. Knowing anything about tonality is also a bonus, how to speak in different ways to different targets, oh yeah and spelling statement with its vowels. Long story short, a love of the English language as opposed to being barely able to use it.

I graduated in Chemistry.
Yet I am in advertising.

The only things u need to be a copywriter is
1. Have a way with words.
2. Creativity.
3. Understanding public and its mentality.

Being a copywriter is soooo much more than just being good at english. Being good at language is the bones of the skeleton, you need creativity, analytical skills and a touch of magic to flesh it out.To be a successful copywriter, you need to understand that the whole is more than the sum of its parts......

It is most necessary to have a way with words , understanding the concept, your client & most importantly your target audience........... understanding advertising & its ways is also required for which you can study ads online or books etc....... not necessary to have a degree, the degree only helps you to understand advertising better & gives you the exposure which you can get doing the above.

Here in Brazil with competition and the makrting getting professional I think it's really necessary.
My degree in ESPM helped me a lot. Never would get where I'm without.
