Someone I know got her logo designed in China for US$ 40. The logo looks like shit but my friend who happens to be a fashion designer doesn't bother. Afterall she got a deal.
So it goes. People who make such decisions based solely on cost simply place low value what they're buying. As I type this I'm staring at that link to "Make Your Own Logo." Your fashion designer friend just bought something off-the-shelf at WalMart because that's the value she placed on what she wanted to purchase, her identity. Perhaps she believes it's like a rain poncho; wear it a few times when she has to, then later pick up a designer trenchcoat. Whether she'll get a chance at a second impression with those who saw her in a poncho or not...who knows.

Good for him. :) Cheap doesn't mean bad, but usually it is. I heard the nike swoosh cost 25USD for Nike. It was the work of a student.

Yeah cheap doesn't mean bad.
If you get payed 1000$ for a logo, it doesn't mean you're worth it.
It means you know how to market yourself.
