ABCs of an ad (Need help.)

Okay first of all I am not affiliated with an agency nor am I student. It's just a passion of mine and thus as a hobby sometimes I create ads. So I was wondering what tools of the trade do I need to start an ad from the scratch? I am not that proficient with photoshop but other than that how does the whole ad making process work? And nah...I am not in any mood of reading any books; thus would appreciate a condensed version of the workings of creating an ad from anyone. Note: I am NOT looking for help on creative ideas. I just need help with art direction, layout and giving ads a professional touch. And also it'd be helpful if you could list some ad creating softwares. Thanx.

he requested abc's , not 123's

- Pick a brand. service, product, etc...
- identify a problem, or opportunity for said brand, what do they need, where do they fail... etc.
- think long and hard about it.
- identify a target audience
- come up with 100 ways to solve their problem, or exploit their opportunity.
- Think about relevancy and message
- throw out 90 of them
- develop touchpoints, online, direct mail, magazine print, event, tv, etc... for each of the 10, where does the audience spend their time and money
- narrow your 10 down to 5
- how will they sell the product, promote the service AND build the brand at the same time
- devlop COHESIVE imagery, copy, and/or interactive elements for each of the 5
- shop them around to people they are supposed to target, are they memorable? do they engage? will they sell?
- gather insight and apply to the best of the best of the best.
- gather more insight after revision
- put it on Ads of the World, prepare to be ripped apart.
- rinse and repeat until you dont care anymore, then find another hobby.

haha i like your ending....thanks a lot. that was very informative. :)
