How do you become a digital creative/ a creative ready for the future of the ad businnes?

This is a topic on a subject i've already more or less mentionned here, but that I would like to launch again...:
how does one become a digital creative?
A better creative?
A creative that's ready for the future of the ad business?
I'm actually not even sure these are three different goals, with things merging together pretty fast.
Should a creative learn web programming, designing and computing codes? Or remain the idea guy all the way?
I've been an art-director for 4 years at a big network agency and I'm now a copywriter at another big network agency.
I'm just wondering how to keep evolving and never be out of 'trend'...
What are your thoughts?
Thanks !

In my opinion the new school get more and more powerfull but as you said the idea guy will be always "on time". Why? Cause there is always something to discover.
But I'm not even "new" in ad business yet, but trying get in.
