Why to study advertising design ?

Hi creative people,

I'v been messing with photoshop for a long long time and been creating some works that caught the attention of others and all my life I'v been watching ads thinking how would I do it and why are some wrong or why are some brilliant, so its almost the time to choose what to study on university, and I think I have what it takes for advertising design and for sure that I would love to create brands, and I never actually wanted to work like same 8-5 job, always wanted to do something creative.Main questions are : what do I get from studying advertising design?, what do the jobs look like that you get with that diploma? and how hard is it to get the job in advertising?

and another thing I plan to go on Ringling, any informations about that?

Thanks a lot :)

Hello and welcome to the boards, 'Hope Boy'.

I was going to address your question of "what do I get from studying advertising design" and I believe that the old quote "you get what you put into it" applies here. At this point in time, you will pay no less than $25,000 (USD) to get a degree and that is not counting supplies, fees, and possible boarding costs. You definitely want to get your money's worth and unfortunately it will take more to land a job in advertising than having the good grades in your classes and a degree.

Current established art directors, copywriters, and designers out of work will be your competition when it comes to applying for a job position; the students that would graduate with you, students in other colleges around The States and other parts of the world and those self-taught will also be competing with you. What you show in your portfolio and who you are at that point when you will be job hunting will be who you are and what you did with the education your schooling gave you. There has to be something there to work with and an instructor can only do so much with each student.

I feel what schooling might do for you though is give you insight about many aspects of the field. When you come up with something you will have someone who has hopefully done work for clients to better guide you and show you the ropes so to speak. Aside from learning how to take a campaign from an idea in your head to the final execution or how to use a software program, I would hope whatever school you chooose will have instructors relevant to your field of study with recent expereince that can provide you with insight on how today's ad agencies work on a day-to-day basis. Creativity is big, but hopefully your instructors can help you improve your skills in research and strategy as well.

I hope you use this information wisely and if this is your true desire, know that there will be challenges. Having studied Graphic Design, I have read a share of frustrations with people who would enjoy making album covers in their prime so they went to school or self-taught themselves and they are now working with real world clients. One person might unfortunately feel as though their creativity is being held back and the field isn't what they imagined since they are now working with a realtor who wants them to work octagons somehow into the design, because he feels that they are a symbol of luck.

I know, it is quiet a stretch, but it goes to show that not everybody start working on a big agency doing work you may see noted in AotW's monthly recognitions. Take our advice and apply it to YOU for you will be the one possibly making the investment. You also know your strengths and weaknesses better than anybody else.

I remember being young and people asking me if I would go into game design simply because I invested a lot of time into them and mastered quiet a few of them. While I still do enjoy video games today, I figured that the field was simply not for me and I enjoyed it more as a pastime rather than a career. I advise you to try and learn as much about the industry as you can: read books, blogs and whatever else you can access. Look into your school too and see if you can find out what instructors will be teaching that degree and how many courses in the curriculum are relevant to Advertising.

I wish you all the best!

Glad to be here chap :D
Emanresu thanks for such detailed answer, you brought my faith in forums back and I think that I understand it better.

First of all thanks to my previous scholar success I'm counting on full scholarship which would cover all of my costs, I could say lucky me but I'v suffered and worked a lot for it but hey at the end I'm kind of lucky :).
Another thing, that is really important is that I come from Bosnia, the country where they haven't heard about Advertising Design yet and where graphic design schools are bad, but I recognize the potential in this business especially in the Croatia ( country near Bosnia for those who's Geography knowledge is weak). I feel like sending e-mails to some companies with question " wtf are you doing? " haha. Even if Mirko Ilic comes from city near mine and that gives me the moral boost, still I'm scared for what is "out there".It's interesting when you go to the market and look at the product thinking how would you do it.

I'm counting on Ringling college, but if You have any more school to recommend I would be really glad.
I'm not afraid of competition, I'm afraid more in failing to get a decent and interesting job because they say that the market is overwhelmed , How real are my fears,is it that hard to get job in advertising?

Hey hope boy! In today’s scenario it’s hard to decide how many new businesses survive their first year, let alone their second, third etc, looking at their advertising design. With more than a million new businesses starting up every year it pays to get yourself ahead of the game and invest in quality design early on and not become one of those in majority that fail within the initial years. So you see its a wise investment to study advertising design. Advertising involves understanding psychology of target customers, tapping the right market and room for creativity. Designers in advertising agencies usually work in one of three designations: graphic designer, art director or creative director. If you're looking for an advertising designing career that will put you in the heart of the business world, it may be a great job for you. Make use of your artistic talent and your marketing know-how in an exciting advertising design career.

Hey,
I heard that online advertising is a very cool form of promotion that uses the Internet and World Wide Web for the expressed purpose of delivering marketing messages to attract customers. Examples of online advertising include contextual ads that appear on search engine results pages, banner ads, in text ads, Rich Media Ads, Social network advertising, online classified advertising, advertising networks and e-mail marketing, including e-mail spam.
