creative director & software

How important is it for any creative director to know their softwares

Depends on the shop. And what the CD does there.

At a large international agency - JWT, Ogilvy, McCann - it does not matter as much to know a lot of software programs, especially for copy-focused CDs. because you have a production team.

At smaller shops you might be expected to do everything, including production.

Keep in mind that IDEAS are more important than PRODUCTION SKILLS for high-level creative talent.

Cordially,

Steve

agreed, as long as high level creative ideas can be executed in the way that the CD intended I do not think that they would need to know, however in a world that is dependent upon growth and knowledge I think it's in anyones best interest to ensure that they have the skills needed to keep pace with technology and trends. You never know when you might need them. Better safe then sorry, it's just a good practice to stay up on things.
