Sex in ads - where is the limit in your country?
mikeelrapido 1401 pencils | Tue, 2009-10-13 09:02Hello!
This is perfect place to start thit discussion. Perfect, because I don't know any other forum where are posting so many people from so many countries...
What do I want to know?
Where is the limit of sexuality (erotic content and nudity) in ads in your countries? What kind of ads are prohibited and why? And do you think citizens of your country are against sex in ads?
Thanks for answering!
Greetings from Warsaw, Poland!

In Norway where I'm from their quite strict and ethical when it comes to sex in ads. You don't see companies selling car tires having sexy girls in their ads. The only time you'd see sexy girls in ads is when the big clothing chains advertise their "summer collections", and even thou they have hot girls in their ads, it's all about "loving the summer" and not "l look hot in this bikini".
In Australia, where I'm currently living, their not as strict. You see sexy girls all over the place - on TV, billboards, magazines and you name it. Personally, I like it! I like beautiful people. It gets my attention. People who can't deal with are most of the time either old or highly religious. They should grow some balls and keep up with time, that's my 5 cents.
How are things in Poland? You guys sure have plenty of hot chicks.

Thanks for your post!
Yes, we have a lot of hot chicks but we also have a lot of Catolics and catolic organizations.. :) It's strange in Poland - you can see ads with strong sexual context but when it comes to ads with gay scenes it's imposible to see any. Nudity is also prohibited..

In Hungary you can show male and female nude bodies as long as you don't show genitals. Even tits are ok. I don't mind it, but I prefer nudity in ads when skin or sexuality is part of the message. When a real estate show a nude chick to sell houses it destroys credibility of the company for me. But it's good that they have the freedom to try and fail.
I also lived in Bahrain, a muslim conservative country. It was not allowed to show skin in ads, except for arms and face. It's not as strict in Saudi Arabia. In Saudi you can't show anything at all, not even eyes.
Currently I live in Australia, which is pretty similar to Hungary. But unlike in Hungary, here you don't see nudity without a reason just for the sake of showing skin. I think the audience is more mature and judgmental towards advertisers.
I think the more atheists you have in a society the more freedom advertisers have.

I totally agree, many ads have sexual context only to cacht people attention, but sexuality has nothing to do with message of their ads.. Without any doubt level of atheism is a factor that is important. But there are also many other factors, like way that society treats human body and sexuality.

Yah, sexuality works when it's appropriate. I will always remember the infamous Ogilvy ad in France I believe, where there was a succession of 3 posters with a girl slowly taking off her clothing as the days past. It was like "the top comes off on January 20th" or something like that. The ad shows that the company delivers on its promises.
Back on topic, in the United States it depends on what's allowed on Cable television vs. network television. Oh, and HBO gets away with a lot more stuff because it's a subscription channel network.
Really, is there a difference between TV channels? One can do more then other?

TV channels, private ones show more nudity than state ones especially in Bosnia, Yea. I agree with Ivan, especially newspapers when they go with nude cover and they are not XXX its bad, for example I dislike FHM. Sex in ads is cool if it has taste in it, you need to know how to put it there.
But until today no one has dared to push the limits of nudity here, strange but true.
Kenneth,
You must be talking about this ad, right ?

I have never seen that specific ad, but that would surely be illegal in Norway. In Australia too. Totally legal in Hungary apparently :p

Our country is promoting all the measures to combat sexual delinquency status, In Vietnam we used them all forms of all measures to spread to people about what should and should not be do ..

I totally agree with Hope Boy - ads with sex need to be "tasty", I mean they need to use sex as part of the message..

In Poland we are quite strict as a Catholic country. If there will be any nudity on the ad, it will not be published.

Except some examples like House Virginity campaign ( http://sexinads.tumblr.com/tagged/house ) or Penigra ( http://sexinads.tumblr.com/tagged/penigra )
But generally these campaigns raised public discussion about limits in advertising.
