Miami Ad School on the front page

Having seen the Risk campaign on the front page, I'm gonna ask the question that burns everyone's finger tips : Ivan, why do students from MAS get to have their work featured on the front page?

Because even if you can tell the students brought a lot of attention to the execution, we rarely see good advertising coming from this school and as Hadrons said, they belong more to the Exhibition forum than to the front page.

Posting MAS ads on the forum would bring more attention to it, and certainly raise the level a little bit. Or maybe we could have some of the best ads from the forum featured on the front page. =)

Anyhoo, I personally think there should be a clear distinction between student and professional work. But there might be some special agreement between MAS and All Creative World that I am not aware of.

Thanks!

To be fair, Sushil, there are very few ads from the forum deserving to be posted on the front page, unfortunately. Maybe even none.

There are lot of students submitting their work for the front page. About 75% of them are from MAS. I guess there is a culture in MAS to send their campaigns to AotW. I reject most of the student work, only about 10% gets through. The campaigns from students on front page is mostly from MAS simply because most of the stuff sent is from there. But many other schools are represented too. See the links for various schools beside MAS.

If a campaign is polished enough to be inspiring in some way I think it deserves to be on the front page to inform the creative community about what are students around the world are up to and also to inspire for fresh thinking. Many of the campaigns from MAS represent a completely new thinking which is almost not present at large agencies unfortunately and which is actually the future of advertising. I'm talking about those campaigns where advertising is partly product design and it's focused on a new experience for the consumer. I think to see this approach is very beneficial to creatives even if the case videos aren't perfect in every sense.

But it's not just the online ideas. Some traditional media ideas are outstanding too. See these for example. Any agency would be happy to have these on their porti I think:

Ivan, I am tired of excuses.
You didn't answer the real sharp well written question Shawali asked.

Judging by our 'beautiful' relationship over the web, you are not going to, either.

Why don't you just lay down the truth -
'it's my blog and I'll do what ever I want.'
or ' I make the rules as I go, and if you don't like it - you are welcome to stay away'.

In a way, that will be a better and a bit more professional than your lame answers.

Ads of the world, in-hence the ones that came from a well respected professional agencies, NOT wanna be pro and I'm kinda on the way.

As a political ad pro - I would tell my audience - follow the money.

Cheers.

p.s. - send my best regards to Billoughsby.

I appreciate any criticism as it helps me improve, but your implied accusations are completely unfounded. MAS is not paying us to promote them if that's what you meant. We don't have any relationship. We used to have a cooperation over a year ago because of the Creative Pro online courses and I was completely open about it, but there was no money exchange and they never had any control over editorial. You can follow the money and you will find that we have Google Adsense with various advertisers that we don't control and couple of stock image/logo advertisers that we have direct relationship with.

I know many consider the front page position an award, but it's not. The awards are the monthly awards only.

Btw, I agree on the distinction of ad school work on the front page. We could have a category or something that says it's student work. It's clear from the credits, but we can make it more obvious. I'm thinking about it.

Thanks for your detailed answer, Ivan.

I get your point, and I'm happy to see that we think alike, when it comes to making a clear distinction between spec ads and professional ads.

A special category would be great, for students (or job seekers) to showcase their work, and agency to head hunt for new talents.

What I was wandering is could there some kind of connection between this would be category and the exhibition forum? We could imagine a grading system, like the front page, and the ads with the highest score get featured in that special category. The idea behind this kind of "contest" is that the "spec" category wouldn't get cluttered by not so good works.

I guess the main idea here is that system would on one hand help students (/beginners/job seekers/etc.) to improve their skills and on the other hand to offer them the opportunity to be rewarded for their hard work.

I know you must spend an awful lot of time managing the front page and all that back end shenanigans and for that you're the best =) and I'd totally understand you wouldn't be able or willing to work on that. But I do think it can be something worth thinking over.

I've been checking your site several times a day since 2007 and I don't get tired of it. I'd be thrilled to help making it more awesome.

Yes, actually I'm planning to do something like this but tailored to advertising so people can post full campaigns and/or videos too. http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/critique

Ivan, you said that only 10% of the ads make it through to the front page.

So I ask, on what basis do you reject the rest of the ads?

I remember you once said, after being criticized for the quality of work on the front page, that you don't only post good ads, but also ones that are extremely bad.
But do you realize that people think it's an achievement to be featured on the first page?

I think there should be a well-defined criteria for judging 'archivable' work. Especially since people view the archive as "the best of the best".
