Jays, noise canceling head phones

Hey guys. It's been a while since I posted on Exhibition, beside my New Year cards.

Here's a little sumthin' sumthin' I made a couple months ago.

Tell me what you guys think.

Comment away, lads!

Edit : following Arthor's comment, I brought some changes to the lay outs.

I have to say man, you produce some of the best stuff I've seen on this site and in the "real world". These are amazing. The second one had me weak. I have to ask you, how long have you been in the business? And if you tell me, "I'm still trying to get in." I'm just going to hang up my jacket right now.

PS: This is not a man crush. I just know talent when I see it. ;-P

Haha thanks, dude. That's one heart warming comment, right here.

So, I am "in the business" and but I'm also not. =)

I have a weird experience, having worked in an agency in Central Asia for 4 years. Got back in 2008 and been freelancing ever since. But I'm getting fed up with it, so I'm looking for a spot in an agency. So, technically, I AM trying to get in =)

Again, thanks for the nice comment.

Saw this on your site. I think they're pretty great. Fonts on the first one need a bit of work; spacing on "every single day of the week" is a little off. And second one I would just put "Come as you are, kinda stairway to heaven, come as you are, nothing else matters (first three notes), come as you are." A little less repetition and it's more effective, plus you can make the fonts larger. Last thing I'm gonna say is are these all supposed to be poster-sized? You may be able to shrink them down to standard 8.5x11. You can probably also make them fold down out of a standard magazine, if you want the poster-like ratio of height to width.

There are supposed to be posters, I guess, but since it'll be mostly seen online, I took some liberties with the format. I like it like my Les Paul. Custom =)

For the spacing in the first one, the text is not really kerned, I'll check that out.

And you may be right for the second one. Less is more. It's just I got inspired with phony song titles =)

Thanks for the comment!

Yeah sure. I'm an art director most and foremost, with a likin' for words.

Awesome. If I can get an ad done with words, then I'm all for it, but for image-based ads, it's hard to make it work when you don't know what you're doing. Lol.

good job Shawali. You obviously know what you 're doing, these ads are ready for production. I love how far you took your idea, and how dramatic you made it. Most of us would just have shown an image of a baby with a black tape over his mouth, and the logo bottom right lol

The toddler needs a bit of a change in the art, the copy is great.

I like them but I found my eyes darted all over the page because they are a little busy, font sizes and styles etc. "The kid next door" had the most immediate clear meaning for me as I read the heading and went straight to the product. The fact the font was smaller allowed this. I could then see the fun in the advert and it prompted me to read the rest of the advert for extra fun :)

That could be just me as everyone is different. What is the general consensus with font size and style? Is there a rule to abide by? Do's and don'ts?

They look great though, excellent art and you should be happy with them.

Hey Dude,

I love the idea, I would like to see a mock of these posted outdoors with the CANCELED plastered on as a secondary component. You could even place the CANCELED over existing concert posters and it'd still work.

But I think you have enough high fives here, personally I hate when people only compliment so here's some critisism. These lack solid direction in typography, font choice, and hierarchy.

Drill Baby Drill
- Flow is broken up with too many different sizes and fonts. Helvetica looks to "default" or generic here.
- Why is the man with the Drill on an angle? If you're not going to follow this with other elements I would say straighten it up.

Kid Next Door
- Fonts are not complimenting each other. The song list typeface is squished and difficult to ready. It also does not work the the display face you used on the title.
- The gap between the words is useless. I know it looks cool you continued the space in his legs. It would be better if that was a leg.

Toddler
- The title fonts are not complimentary again (Maybe if ToldeR was in all caps)
- Too many fonts again. Why is the "IN YOUR TRAIN" a separate font? Keep it the same as the body.
- Design is far too top heavy
- The type doesn't fill up enough, there's to much white space. I'm not saying this like the client. It feels like a lazy solution. If you're going to have that whitespace have the same amount at the top.

This site is a great resource for complimenting and choosing the right fonts and why.

Cheers!

Here's the comment I was waiting for =)

Thanks for the appreciation but especially the critique.

For the Drill baby Drill one, the whole generic helvetica thing is done on purpose. For this ads, I took my inspirations from 70's era rock posters, back when helvetica was the shit.

But I totally get your comments about the other two. For the last few months, I've became more and more a big fan of fonts. Keep learning everyday. This website is a hoot. I'm reworking on these!

Thanks again. A positive feed back from someone with such an ass kicking portfolio as yours is a precious thing =)

Shawali's picture

There are definitely do's and don'ts when it comes to fonts.

And yes, generally speaking, less is more but for me, a visual with multiple well arranged fonts is always an eye-candy.

Just to piggyback off of arthor's comments, I would take the shine off of the "cancelled" tape and maybe go with a stamp look or texture. Keep these looking all retro and you've got it. The new shininess and old vintage look don't go together. Other than that I love the idea. The toddler one I think speaks the clearest. The teenage rocker next door one pits a subject matter that goes too closely in hand with the rock poster concept to be a funny juxtaposition. Otherwise great work.

some suggestions for the 3rd ad:

LIVE from* the seat right behind you.

instead of supporting act (which doesnt make much sense in english)
perhaps 'opening performer' or 'guest starring'

and for the 1st ad:

instead of live act, live performance.

Love the idea, love the style.

But what bugs me a little is that you made it look really retro (which i like) specially with the textures on the BG. But you didnt use the textures on the text and images. Which makes it look a little bit unrealistic. Just my two cents!

Still loving it tough hehe

How on Earth is this similar?!? Do you even know what you are talking about? Go back to school, this is not for kids.

certaintly's picture
certaintly

I'm starting to think you are retarded.

How are they similar? Well, let's see. Both products cancel out noise/distractions:
-headphones that mute unwanted sounds like construction work, teenage garage bands, and whiny babies
-a symphony that offers childcare that takes care of your noisy or needy kids.

execution:
-both utilize music poster elements (one posing as classical music, one posing as street band posters)
-both have the message ingrained in the "title" of the supposed song.
-both have sarcastic tones.

it's sad that i had to spell this out for you. I can't keep schooling you because I am still in school. Perhaps you are the one who needs to go back to it.

I’m guessing no one takes you seriously and you are frustrated. Maybe it’s because you are still in some kind of school, maybe because you are too young. But you want to be a grown up advertiser like Don Draper that everybody takes seriously. You need to be heard, you need to have attention. You don’t have a problem criticizing other peoples work, even with almost no experience. You are absolute sure, that idea you came up with has never been utilized. Ever. It’s yours and everybody else is ripping you off. You see a cool series of ads and get jealous, so your comment's reduced to one word. Bravo! I’ve been in this business for 20+ years and I know your kind extremely well. So, again: enjoy the ride.
Plus: my next advice to you is going to be payable.

certaintly's picture
certaintly

I never asked for your advice. But here's some for you: quit making assumptions and false deductions.
1) I am not absolutely sure my idea http://adsoftheworld.com/forum/137055 hasnt been done before and never did i say it was (false assumption #1). However, I searched all english institute ads in adsoftheworld before working on my product and I didnt find the idea done before, so i came up with this concept and executed it (about a year ago). A couple days ago I found my idea come out: http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/britanico_english_institute_cher
2) I didn't think I was ripped off, in fact, i even clarified that point (false assumption #2). I just wanted to know if I could still use the idea in my portfolio and was simply clarifying the timestamps showing that i indeed thought of it first before i saw this recent execution so people wouldnt simply say "NO, DONE"
3) All I said was that shiwali's idea here is similar to the one i linked. which it is. any other implications are of your fabrication (false assumption #3). Shiwali can come in and say his piece. Whether those ads were inspiration or simply coincidence. I have no reason to doubt him so I'll take him at his word. However, saying that they are NOT similar, is just utterly retarded and makes you lose credibility, at least in my eyes.

4) let's not forget who started being nasty first here.
